ELEC: Embedded Linux and Other Revolutionary Combinations
Michael Tiemann     (ELEC talk, June 2000)

Talk abstract: Some of the most innovative and revolutionary results occur when methods from one field of endeavor are combined with methods from another: networked file systems, digital signal processing, and graphical user interfaces combined with internet-enabled hypertext are but three of many examples. In this talk, Mr. Tiemann will discuss a newly emerging combination, that of embedded systems and client/server computing, and talk about factors (such as Linux) that will likely determine the technical and commercial potential of this combination.

Speaker bio: Michael Tiemann is one of the pioneers of open source software and well-respected expert within the open source community. His early work with GNU software created world-leading technologies and became an inspiration to Linus Torvalds and an enabling technology for the birth of Linux in 1991. Today, as Chief Technical Officer of Red Hat, Michael continues to shape the future of open source software as it drives the next- generation of embedded, post-PC computing devices. Prior to joining Red Hat, Michael was co-founder and Acting CTO of Cygnus Solutions, which was acquired by Red Hat in January 2000.
