Wind River answers Linux challenge with BSDi acquisition -- Embedded software market leader Wind River Systems Inc. has announced its plan to acquire the software assets of Berkeley Software Design Inc. (BSDi). In addition to acquiring the commercial version of BSD UNIX, Wind River also says it will support the FreeBSD open source project, in order to advance the standing of its newly acquired technologies. story

Green Hills' IDE to support embedded Linux -- Green Hills Software announced that it will make its MULTI 2000 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) available for embedded Linux based system development. story
System-on-chip maker enhances embedded Linux support -- NetSilicon announced upgrades to its NET+Works platforms, which integrate software support with the company's NET+ARM system-on-chip (SOC) processors. In particular, NET+Lx 1.5, based on uClinux, gains enhanced support for Flash memory, faster serial data rates, and more. story
Multi-OS real-time framework runs VxWorks with Linux -- OnCore announced plans to support the use of VxWorks applications in a mixed OS environment that can include Linux, pSOS, POSIX, and other OS platforms. story
Free QNX downloads/CDs top 3 million -- QNX Software Systems Ltd. reports that the Get QNX program, launched in September 2000, has achieved a significant milestone -- one million downloads. In addition, another two million free QNX real-time platform CDs have been distributed with trade magazines worldwide. story
NetSilicon announces enhanced system-on-chip -- NetSilicon launched its
latest system-on-chip (SOC) processor, designed for makers of network-connected electronic devices. The new SOC integrates a 32-bit ARM core, 10/100 Ethernet, 2 serial and 4 parallel ports, lots of digital I/O, and is supported by uClinux. story
Real-time and Embedded Systems Forum presentations -- the presentation slides from the Brussels meeting of the Open Group's Real-time and Embedded Systems Forum, held March 22, 2001, are now available online. Included are an interesting talk on "Trends in Embedded Linux" and one on "Market Drivers for Real-time and Embedded Systems." story
Amiga to support Sharp's new Linux PDA -- Sharp recently announced plans to market a Linux-based PDA as one of the world's first Linux-based handheld devices. Amiga intends to develop content for Sharp's new Linux PDA, based on a unique portable Linux/Java application platform. story
Lineo rolls out 2nd generation Embedded Linux SDK -- Embedix Software Development Kit (SDK) 2.0 adds broader processor support and makes it easier for developers to configure, customize, and deploy Linux-based embedded software solutions. The new SDK introduces a "snap-in" architecture for the dynamic addition of new hardware and software support and features. story
OnCore sets up shop in Europe -- OnCore Systems Corporation announced that it has established a wholly owned subsidiary in the United Kingdom to serve as a base for European operations. The new European headquarters will be headed up by Philip Johnson, who will serve as the Director of European Operations. story

Agenda to launch "first pure Linux PDA" in US April 3 -- Agenda Computing officially launched "the world's first-ever pure Linux PDA," the Agenda VR3, to the U.S. consumer market at Spring Comdex in Chicago. story
Opinion: Embed Linux, and put Microsoft on the desktop -- Guy Kewney of ZDNet UK's Anchordesk reflects on all the Linux-in-devices action at the recent CeBIT expo. story
Combo embedded conference now Silicon Valley's largest -- the co-location of two cutting-edge events is shaping up to be the largest embedded systems conference in Silicon Valley this year. Together, the Internet Device Builder and the Applied Computing Conference will focus on the core technologies enabling the next Internet and connected device revolution. story
CodeBase Database Engine now supports Embedded Linux -- Sequiter Software announced that they are offering full support for using their database engine in Embedded Linux based systems. CodeBase for Linux features a small footprint and low overhead, and is licensed on a royalty-free basis. story
Embedded Linux development in India -- in an article in India's The Economic Times, R Subramanyam reviews the growing trend within India of using Linux as an embedded operating system. story
Free hardware design library proposed -- John G. Spooner of ZDNet News writes about a growing number of "open hardware" projects that are trying to bring concepts from the open-source software world to the hardware business. story
New Mozilla-based Internet appliance operating environment -- OEone Corporation announced that it is building a Linux-based operating environment platform on Mozilla open source Internet client technology. By re-engineering the desktop using Mozilla technology, OEone plans to offer increased functionality while supporting all of the standard Internet applications. story

Linux Audio Development -- the Linux Audio Development (LAD) mailing list is dedicated to sound architecture and application development for Linux. The goal is to encourage widespread code re-use and cooperation, and to provide a common forum for all audio related software projects. story
Multimedia Application Integration Architecture -- MAIA is an Open Design effort, formerly named MuCoS (the Multimedia Communication System), aimed at creating a new plugin and application integration standard for multimedia. MAIA will provide an API for client applications, that allow them to communicate
through real time streams and time stamped events. story
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture -- the primary goals of this project are to (1) create a fully modularized sound driver which supports kerneld and kmod; (2) create the ALSA Kernel API which surpasses the current OSS API; (3) maintain compatibility with most OSS/Lite binaries; create the ALSA Library (C, C++), which simplifies ALSA application development; and (5) create the ALSA Manager, an interactive configuration program for the driver. story
Open Sound System for Linux -- OSS/Linux is a commercial implementation of the Linux sound drivers that are packaged with the Linux kernel. OSS/Linux is 100% compatible with the "freeware" drivers (now known as OSS/Free). story
