Embedded Linux at ESC 2002 San Francisco -- Missed the big annual Embedded Systems Conference held recently in San Francisco? LinuxDevices.com's Rick Lehrbaum brings you all the juicy details of the outstanding progress being made by Embedded Linux, in his customary report on "all things Linux at the Embedded Systems Conference". Story
A new era: Carrier-grade Linux for Telecommunications -- This whitepaper by MontaVista Software's Glenn Seiler provides an introduction to one of the most important emerging applications for Linux -- as a "carrier grade" operating system platform in public network telecommunications products. Seiler explains why Linux is rapidly becoming the OS of choice in the telecommunications equipment industry, and outlines the key requirements for what he calls "Carrier-grade Linux . . . a newly emerging category of Linux". Story
Real-time and Linux, Part 2: the Preemptible Kernel -- Part 1 of this series at ELJonline introduced the fundamental issues of real-time with Linux. In this installment, Kevin Dankwardt examines recent efforts to bring real-time capabilities to Linux applications by making improvements to the Linux kernel. To date, the majority of this work has been to make the kernel more responsive -- to reduce latency by reducing the preemption latency, which can be quite long in Linux. Story
Quest for PDA Utopia: Qtopia? -- Thinking about getting one of Sharp's new Zaurus SL-5500 Linux PDAs? This online tutorial at ELJonline helps you get started developing your first app for the Zaurus using Trolltech's Qtopia, and shows you how you can test it on your desktop before your new Zaurus arrives. Story
MontaVista unveils Linux for carrier-grade telecom apps -- MontaVista Software announced "MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 2.1", which the company calls the first carrier-grade quality Linux distribution targeted for edge and core telecom apps, including converging IP and voice networks, optical networks, and signaling and VoIP gateways. Lineo obtains $1M additional funding -- Lineo, faced with a recent liquidity crisis, has obtained new funding. CEO Matt Harris told LinuxDevices.com that the company has obtained "a firm commitment of at least $1 million" in equity funding, and possibly more. Harris said Lineo is currently striving for mid-2002 profitability. Story
uClibc 0.9.11 released -- Erik Andersen announced the release of uClibc version 0.9.11, which fixes bugs and provides a number of enhancements, resulting in many more applications compiling under the resource-efficient open source library. Additionally, a gcc-3.0.4 toolchain that natively targets uClibc now offers full C++ support for uClibc, including the libstdc++ library. Story
uClinux gets shared libraries from Snapgear -- SnapGear announced the addition of shared library support for the uClinux kernel. Shared library support yields significant memory advantages for embedded developers by allowing applications to share common code libraries rather than individually static-linking them in. (Note: a similar announcement two weeks ago from RidgeRun also pointed out that dynamic library support has the additional benefit of enabling the use of non-LGPL, proprietary software modules.) Story
Linux-based set-top box partnership targets sub-$150 market -- Century Embedded Technologies (the Microwindows folks) and VT Media Technologies have formed a strategic alliance to target the low-cost broadband/IP set-top box marketplace. At CeBIT 2002, the two companies announced what they claim is the world's first broadband set-top box with a sub-$150 price point. Story

As part of our continuing efforts to support the rapidly growing Embedded Linux Market, we are pleased to announce the online 2001 Embedded Linux Market Survey. The survey, which is structured in three parts, asks developers of Linux-based embedded systems and intelligent devices to anonymously provide information about their applications, their embedded Linux OS requirements and preferences, and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of using Linux in embedded applications.
