Embedded Linux tops developers' 2002 wishlist
Embedded Linux is currently the third most popular embedded operating system -- behind Wind River's VxWorks and Microsoft's MS-DOS -- and may leep-frog into the #1 position as soon as next year, according to a new report on embedded software trends published last month by software market analyst Evans Data Corporation.

HP expands commitment to Linux in devices
HP will highlight its growing Linux commitment next week at LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco, by showcasing several Linux-based HP products, technologies, and initiatives. Specifically, HP will announce new security software for Linux, demonstrate HP's internally-developed Embedded Linux platform for intelligent devices, announce the open sourcing of an embeddable web services platform, and evangelize a recently launched open source developer portal.

Multi-vendor open source set-top box project launches
Century Embedded Technologies and National Semiconductor announced the launch of Linux4.TV, a new website dedicated to the promotion and support of open source projects and application program interfaces (APIs) for Linux-based interactive TVs and next-generation digital set-top boxes (STBs). Red Hat and Tuxia also are participating in the project, as members of Linux4.TV's "Development Partner Program".

Lineo receives $20M funding; backers include Sun, Hitachi
Lineo announced the closing of a strategic investment round of $20 million, bringing the overall investment total in Lineo to $57 million. Participants in the funding included Sun Microsystems, Hitachi, Canopy Group, and Egan Managed Capital.

India's "Simputer" set for November roll-out
According to an article published online by the Times of India, the sub-$200, open-licensed, Linux-based handheld computer known as the "Simputer" is being readied for initial customer shipments in November by its first manufacturer.

KDE Project releases KDevelop 2.0 Linux IDE
The KDE Project announced the release of KDevelop 2.0 as part of the general release of KDE version 2.2. KDevelop is a popular Linux/UNIX integrated development environment (IDE) for C/C++ development that includes powerful tools for the rapid development and design of sophisticated C/C++ applications.
