Hacking the iPAQ with Linux, for fun and profit -- this interesting how-to article is Part 2 of the exciting new LinuxDevices.com series that explores the history, status, alternative architectures, and future developments of Linux on PDAs and handheld devices. In this installment, we prepare for future exploration of three "off-the-shelf" iPAQ PDA distro's, by obtaining, installing, and testing the "generic" iPAQ Linux support from handhelds.org. story

Comparing two approaches to real-time Linux -- this "guest column" from Lineo's CTO (Tim Bird) compares two alternative methods of providing real-time services within Linux -- the RTLinux/RTAI "Interrupt Abstraction" approach, and the approach of "Preemption Improvement" by modifying the Linux kernel. story

Embedded Linux solution brings UPnP to home control -- Metro Link will demonstrate a new software solution which provides residential gateway and appliance connectivity functions and supports the Universal Plug 'n Play (UPnP) standard, at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show. story

Another new "Linux like" embedded OS enters the scene -- as if the embedded software market wasn't crowded enough already, a French startup has invented what it hopes will prove to be a better embedded software "mouse trap" -- and it's supposedly "Linux compatible." story

The first annual PPC/Linux community awards -- penguinppc.org has announced a mix of serious and tongue-in-cheek winners and losers for 2000. story

Lineo ports uClinux 2.4 to DragonBall -- the successful porting of the uClinux 2.4 kernel to the Motorola DragonBall brings important new features llike USB support, IrDA, and QoS (quality of service) support. story

Birth of a new Embedded Linux company -- Tuxia plans to address what it calls "the rapidly expanding Embedded Linux market." Its emphasis will be on Linux-based software solutions for Internet appliances, webpads, set-top boxes, thin clients, and screen phones. story

PocketLinux taps Jabber to bring XML messaging to devices -- Transvirtual Technologies has integrated Jabber's instant messaging technology into its open source PocketLinux mobile device operating environment. PocketLinux runs on various PDAs, cellular phones, and set-top boxes. story

Embedded Linux architecture for tiny devices is unveiled -- a small footprint Embedded Linux operating system ("PocketBee") is being developed for use on a credit-card sized portable/mobile/wearable computer ("ChipSlice"). This article describes PocketBee's architecture and components. story

EL/IX finds a home on NetSilicon SoCs -- in one of the few public endorsements to date of the Red Hat proposed EL/IX standard, system-on-chip maker NetSilicon says it will incorporate EL/IX into the embedded Linux support for its SoCs. Support for Red Hat's eCos OS is also in the works. story
