A developer's review of REDSonic's Embedded Linux toolkit -- This article is the fifth in LinuxDevices.com's series of reviews of Embedded Linux toolkits. Each of the toolkits is evaluated against a common set of criteria which include ease of use, overall toolkit architecture, methods of package management, diversity of platform support, and openness of the source code. In this installment, embedded developer Jerry Epplin takes a close-up look at REDSonic's RED-Builder 2.0 XE toolkit. Story
Intel throws a big party for XScale at IDF -- At this week's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Intel celebrated the launch of three families of embedded processors based on XScale architecture, the successor to the company's highly popular StrongARM. Following on the recent launch of the PXA210/250 "application processors", Intel used the occasion of IDF to launch the IOP321 "I/O processor" as well as several "network processors" including the device-oriented IXP425. Intel has apparently selected Embedded Linux to be one of the three main operating systems which will support its new XScale-based processor families, a situation which was abundantly clear at IDF. Here are some news items related to IDF and the XScale rollout . . .
ELC paves way for Embedded Linux platform specification -- The Board of Directors of the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) voted to adopt an Intellectual Property Agreement (IPA) that lays the groundwork for building a unified embedded Linux platform specification. Details will be available and working groups chartered at the March 12 ELC Business/Technical meeting, being held in conjunction with the Embedded Systems Conference 2002 (ESC2002) in San Francisco. IMPORTANT NOTE: This new initiative will have a major impact on the future ELC -- and Embedded Linux in general -- so the ELC is urging all interested parties to attend its ESC annual meeting. Story
New book demystifies embedded firmware -- CMP Books has announced publication of a new technical book entitled Embedded Systems Firmware Demystified, by Ed Sutter. Sutter, a "distinguished member of the technical staff" at Lucent, has been working in embedded systems since 1983 and is the author and maintainer of MicroMonitor, an open source embedded system boot platform. As part of our continuing efforts to support the rapidly growing Embedded Linux Market, we are pleased to announce the online 2001 Embedded Linux Market Survey. The survey, which is structured in three parts, asks developers of Linux-based embedded systems and intelligent devices to anonymously provide information about their applications, their embedded Linux OS requirements and preferences, and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of using Linux in embedded applications.
