IBM announces massive Linux investment in Europe -- IBM plans to invest more than $200 million over the next several years, to create Linux development centers across Europe, develop alliances with Linux-focused business partners, and deploy about 600 specialized Linux consultants, hardware and software specialists, and services professionals. story

Kaffe combo embedded/desktop JVM to be GPL'd -- Transvirtual Technologies announced that the desktop and embedded versions of the Kaffe Java Virtual Machine (JVM) are being combined into one version. The new combo JVM will be released as Open Source software later this year. story

Red Hat GPLs Source-Navigator IDE -- Red Hat underlined its commitment to Open Source software by releasing several development tools under GPL. The tools include Source-Navigator, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and Insight, a graphical debugger. story

RTAI 24.1.0 adds PowerPPC and Linux kernel 2.4 real-time support -- the RTAI development team announced the beta release of RTAI version 24.1.0. Source code for RTAI is freely available for download. story

Linux driver supports USB-to-Ethernet controllers -- Scyld Computing has released a GPL Linux driver for a USB-to-Ethernet adapter made by CATC. The driver supports several chip-level USB-to-Ethernet controllers. story

Call for Papers: 2nd Embedded Linux Expo & Conference -- the Embedded Linux Expo & Conference (ELEC) announced the call for papers for the Boston area conference to be held this October. Abstracts are due by August 11. story

Korean Embedded Linux firm attracts $6M investment -- Palm Palm Technology recently developed Tynux, an Embedded Linux distribution targeting the mobile device market including wireless Internet access terminals and cellular phones. story

PC-Doctor adds diagnostics for Linux-based systems -- the company says its product provides, among other things, "an enterprise-strength and structured diagnostic environment" for embedded Linux applications. story

Axis to proactively develop Bluetooth standards -- Axis, a pioneer in embedding Linux in smart appliances and one of 37 founding members of the BlueTooth SIG, intends to invest in efforts to advance the development of emerging Bluetooth standards. story

Using serial LCDs in embedded Linux systems -- not all systems need large graphic displays. An article at linuxfocus.org explains how to interface low cost, small sized, low power serial LCD displays to embedded Linux based systems. story
