Hacking Ellison's NIC for fun and profit -- in this LinuxDevices.com feature article, Embedded developer Jerry Epplin takes The New Internet Computer Company's Linux-based "NIC" Internet appliance for a spin and reports on his impressions. Never content to simply use stuff, Epplin proceeds to hack into the NIC and solve what he considers to be its main problem -- the lack of a built-in email client. story

Two dozen companies to bring Linux to TV set-tops -- this week, a group of companies announced formation of the TV Linux Alliance, which will define a standards-based Linux environment for the "advanced digital set-top box" market. The twenty-four companies founding the new alliance include major suppliers to cable, satellite, and telecommunications operators. story

VDC forecasts strong growth for Linux in embedded -- a recent market study just completed by Venture Development Corporation (VDC) shows strong steady growth for Linux in the Embedded Market (graph included). story

Europe forms an Embedded Linux Consortium chapter -- this week, the ELC officially formed ELC-Europe, with the goal to advance the ELC's European presence via promotion, marketing, and standardization-related activities across the region. story

Start-up claims efficient instruction set translation technology -- startup Transitive claims to have attained the holy grail of instruction set emulation. They demonstrated their new technology at the Embedded Processor Forum this week, showing a pair of Linux application binaries running both native and translated on a pair of identical Cobalt Cubes. story

News & trends from the Embedded Processor Forum -- ZDNet's John G. Spooner reports on microprocessor trends and other news from the annual Embedded Processor Forum held this week in San Jose, CA. story

Kit aids uClinux-based ARM7TDMI designs -- Lineo announced availability of a development kit that includes tools, hardware, and software for ARM7TDMI-based Embedded Linux development. story

New Embedded Linux support for IBM PPC 405GP -- Lineo announced that IBM has selected Lineo's Embedix OS to provide Embedded Linux support for the IBM PowerPC 405GP development system. story

Nat Semi announces STB OSS partnership -- National Semiconductor has selected Century Embedded Technologies to provide Embedded Linux support for National's Geode SP1SC10 set-top box (STB) reference platform. story

Jabber instant messaging gets a voice -- Voice IM will allow access to instant messaging (IM) from any phone in the world, as well as from wireless data devices. Mundie, Tiemann: Great open source debate -- after claiming last month that the open source model is flawed, and "responsible for releasing unhealthy code," Microsoft senior VP Mundie is set to debate the issue at an open-source conference in July. He'll face a formidable opponent -- Red Hat's Michael Tiemann. story

MiniGUI -- a small windowing system support library -- the MiniGUI project's goal is to provide a light weight Graphical User Interface (GUI) for real-time embedded systems based on Linux. MiniGUI defines some Win32-like APIs. story

HAVi -- Home Audio Video Interoperability network architecture -- HAVi Inc. is a not-for-profit association of leading consumer electronics, software, semiconductor, and computer manufacturers formed to promote a network architecture for Home Audio Video Interoperability. Intel Open Source UPnP SDK for Linux -- the Intel Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Software Development Kit (SDK) for Linux helps hardware and software developers build easy connectivity into devices that have an Embedded Linux operating system. The UPnP architecture enables discovery and control between devices on a network, independent of particular operating systems, programming languages, or physical network connections. story
