New Sylvania Internet/TV has "Linux inside" -- this new TV set from Sylvania Computer Products represents the first in a new product category: the Internet/TV. It contains a built-in x86-based Internet appliance, provides an SVGA-resolution display (800 x 600), and has interface connectors for video, audio, phone line, and Ethernet. Its embedded operating system? Linux, of course! story

Device review: Axis 2120 Network Camera -- John Lombardo reviews the Axis 2120 Network Camera, an intelligent network-ready camera with a built-in 100 MHz RISC microprocessor running an embedded Linux operating system. story

Embedded Linux takes center stage at Futurist convention -- exhibitors from the world of academia and leading technology research departments unveiled their latest inventions this week at the ACM1: Beyond Cyberspace conference in San Jose, CA. Transmeta releases "Midori" -- Linux for gadgets -- Transmeta, the employer of Linux originator Linus Torvalds, has released its implementation of Linux (formerly dubbed "Mobile Linux") as an open source project under then name "Midori Linux." The distribution supports the reduced footprint and power management requirements of "small devices." announcement / analysis

Call for papers -- Embedded Linux Expo & Conference -- the RTC Group has issued a call for papers for its third Embedded Linux Expo & Conference (ELEC) scheduled for June 26-27 in San Jose, CA. story

RidgeRun releases Open Source Service Discovery Protocol -- support for Bluetooth's Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) has been made available for the OpenBT Linux Bluetooth stack sponsored by Axis Communications. The SDP support is part of RidgeRun's upcoming distribution of DSPLinux which is focused on Texas Instruments' Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). story

ELC grapples with mounting pressure for Embedded Linux standards -- the ELC is hosting a special open meeting on "Embedded Linux Technical Interests" in response to mounting pressure for standards discussions in a number of key areas related to embedded Linux. The meeting will take place the evening before the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. story

Lineo ports uClinux to Motorola ColdFire MCF5272 -- Lineo announced the porting of uClinux to the MCF5272. Nearly the entire family of ColdFire processors is now supported by uClinux. story

CLIQ 2001 talks schedule -- the schedule for talks and BOFs for the Colorado Linux Info Quest (CLIQ) conference and exhibit (CLIQ), including a presentation by Rick Lehrbaum on "Embedded Linux," has been finalized. The conference takes place on March 30th in Denver. story

PalmOS is losing ground in Europe -- according to an article by Michael Kanellos of CNET News.com, although Palm controls the lion's share of the overall market for handheld computers, its market dominance is slipping in Europe. Naturally, this improves the opportunity for Embedded Linux. story

Chinese Linux for iPAQ to be unveiled at Cebit -- Esfia will unveil a Chinese Linux PDA solution for the Compaq iPAQ, based on its RedBlue/Palmlike environment, at CeBit in Hanover, Germany. story

Applied Computing Conference talks announced -- the technical program for the May 14-17, 2001 Applied Computing Conference has been announced. This year there will be four talks on Embedded Linux. story

Linux-based wireless iPAQ solution now available -- Trolltech and Lisa Systems have collaborated on a comprehensive Linux solution for the Compaq iPAQ palmtop computer, which will be demonstrated at CeBit. story

Hard Hat Linux hits the battlefield -- Hard Hat Linux has been selected by ITT for use as the embedded operating system in a "soldiers radio." The project is funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). story

Agenda to challenge Palm with "pure Linux PDA" -- Agenda Computing plans to be the first company in the world to launch a "pure Linux PDA", through an April 3, 2001 launch of its VR3 PDA at Comdex Chicago. The VR3 belongs to a new class of PDAs that will compete with Palm's immensely popular products by offering higher performance processors and more sophisticated operating systems. story

Esfia announces X-based Linux PDA solution -- the Esfia's PDA environment is a complete Window system that includes Esfia's "Palmlike Window Launcher," X server, FLTK GUI toolkit, and a collection of useful applications, all written using the standard X API. story

HP to develop Linux-based consumer entertainment products -- Hewlett-Packard and RealNetworks have announced a collaboration to develop a family of easy-to-use digital entertainment products designed to enable consumers to download, personalize, and enjoy their favorite music, streaming video, and other digital content from the comfort of their living rooms. story

New Chinese PDA to use Bluepoint Embedded Linux -- Bluepoint Linux Software will supply Embedded Linux and related application software for use in a new handheld computer for the Chinese market, to be manufactured by Great Wall Computer in Shenzhen. story

"Linux Inside" seminars come to Wash. and Colo. -- MontaVista Software is hosting free full-day Embedded Linux seminars for software developers: in Bellevue, WA on March 23, and in Boulder, CO on March 27. story

The Midori Linux Project -- Midori Linux is an Open Source project for delivering system software on small devices. It includes a build system, a Linux kernel with memory- and storage-conserving features, and system-level support for normal Linux software on platforms which might otherwise require custom "embedded" applications. story

ROLO -- an open source boot loader for x86 Linux systems -- ROLO is a simple ROM bootloader for x86-based Linux systems. ROLO is a part of the ELinOS Embedded Linux Distribution, and is released under GPL with full source code available. story
