Introducing 'Embedded Linux: Hardware, Software and Interfacing' -- Dr. Craig Hollabaugh discusses his newly released technical book on Embedded Linux (published by Addison Wesley) in this interesting article created especially for LinuxDevices.com's readers. Story
A 'second generation' iPAQ-based wearable computer -- This article describes a "second generation" iPAQ-based wearable computer running Linux, which was developed by researchers at the Multimedia Communications Lab (KOM) of Darmstadt University in Darmstadt, Germany. The system is being used as a mobile client for IP telephony experiments, and for the development of wearable computer user interface technologies. Story
RTAI project changes license of RTAI core to GPL -- To reduce the risk of lawsuits due to a patent covering certain techniques used in RTLinux, the competing Real Time Application Interface (RTAI) project has changed the license associated with portions of RTAI from LGPL to GPL. The first of the following two articles explains why portions of RTAI's license were changed from LGPL to GPL, and how that might impact applications based on RTAI. The second article suggests that the RTAI license change, as implemented, may not qualify it as GPL software with respect to the terms of the Open RTLinux Patent License.
The past, present, and future of the FreeDOS Project -- In this article, FreeDOS Project founder Jim Hall shares his thoughts on the past, present, and future of the FreeDOS Project -- a complete, free, MS-DOS compatible operating system released under the GNU GPL license. Sounds like a good low-end open source OS for projects that can't afford the resource requirements or complexity of Linux. Story
ELC Working Group formed to standardize Embedded Linux -- The Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) has formed the proposed international working group (WG) to pursue an API-centric approach to standardizing a computing platform for using Linux in embedded applications. The group currently consists of 8 representatives from 7 ELC member companies, and a European kickoff of the WG is planned for April 11, 2002, at Disneyland Europe (Paris). Story
Consortium pursues embedded Linux standard -- This article at Embedded.com reports on the ELC's meeting that was held in conjunction with the Embedded Systems Conference two weeks ago. Story
Latest news on the Sharp Zaurus Linux-PDA -- Sharp has begun shipping the consumer model of its Linux-based Zaurus PDA, and has launched a new website which will serve both end-users and developers. In addition, the Zaurus was highly visible at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this week. Lastly, an article has been published about the OpenZaurus Project, which was created to develop a community-driven alternative Embedded Linux ROM image for the Zaurus . . .
IBM to target $4.5B telecom industry with hardened Linux servers -- IBM has announced that they are going after the $4.5 billion telecommunications space. To help accomplish this, the IBM Linux Technology Center is working with the open source community to deliver carrier grade Linux, a "hardened" version of Linux which will offer enhanced performance, reliability, availability, and serviceability. As part of our continuing efforts to support the rapidly growing Embedded Linux Market, we are pleased to announce the online 2001 Embedded Linux Market Survey. The survey, which is structured in three parts, asks developers of Linux-based embedded systems and intelligent devices to anonymously provide information about their applications, their embedded Linux OS requirements and preferences, and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of using Linux in embedded applications.
