FSMLabs announces Multiprocessor RTLinux on PowerPC -- RTLinux now runs on symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) PowerPCs. Support is currently available for dual G4 PowerMacs and the IBM RS/6000 (dual and quad) and will soon include SynergyMicro's products as well. story
ESC Chicago (July 2001) program announced -- the program for the Embedded Systems Conference Chicago has been announced. With a special focus on automotive and industrial applications, the event's 90 classes and tutorials address the technical issues involved in building intelligence into everyday devices. In particular, one new embedded Linux oriented class is entitled "Debugging Embedded Linux Device Drivers." story
Applied Computing Conference announces keynote talks -- the program for the Applied Computing Conference (May 14-17, Santa Clara, CA) has also been announced. Keynotes will address the rollout of InfiniBand, the move to PCI 3.0, and the dramatic growth in network bandwidth and capability. Embedded Linux talks include "Linux in Applied and Embedded Systems" (Rick Lehrbaum, LinuxDevices.com), "Teaching Experienced Developers to Embed Linux" (Gene Robinson, I-Logix), "Tuning Linux for IA based Communication Appliances" (Bill Weinberg, MontaVista), and "QoS on Embedded Real Time Linux" (Al Feczko, TimeSys). story
Linuxcare, Turbolinux scrap merger -- CNET News.com reports that, after three months of operating as a single company, Turbolinux and Linuxcare have called off their merger because of difficulties joining the companies' finances and operations. story
Linux jumps into handheld battle -- the Wall Street Journal has discovered the entry of Embedded Linux into the handheld computer market, as evidenced by this article from WSJ Interactive Edition editor Pui-Wing-Tam. story
Embedded GNOME project in Japan? -- according to a recent posting at gnome.org, there is a new embedded GNOME project in Japan aimed at supporting handheld computers (PDAs, etc.). The project, called Sikigami (which supposedly means daemon in old Japanese), is a GUI environment for handheld computers based on GNOME. story
New Linux-based PVR software solution -- Metro Link recently demonstrated a new Linux-based Metro-Media Personal Video Recorder (PVR) application that consists of PVR/DVR software with the capability to play, stop, rewind, and record programs. The demo took place on a TV set controlled by a UPnP-enabled television remote control, laptop, and Intel StrongARM 1110 "Assabet board" running LynuxWorks' Blue Cat Linux. story
Sony tests Linux on PlayStation 2 -- Sony is producing 1,000 copies of a special Linux development kit for the PS2. The company plans to release an official version of Linux for the PS2, but it will initially only be compatible with Japanese PS2s. story
iomojo GPLs its camera server software -- the first release of iomojo's camera server software is now available for free public download. iomojo has created an implementation of Linux and other GNU software that provides simple remote access to video camera data as well as control of the camera. story
Bayonne milestone #6 released -- this latest enhancement of the GNU multi-line voice response telephony project focuses on providing a free software platform for creating and deploying next generation XML integrated voice applications. story
OpenTV announces Linux support commitment -- the company's key embedded technologies will soon be available for Linux-based systems. These include an interactive TV middleware solution, browser technology, and an MHP implementation that is currently under development. story
Netgem launches open platform for interactive TV -- a new reference design is intended to accelerate development of digital TV interactive services. The platform is based on IBM's PowerPC-based STB032 set-top box integrated controller along with an embedded Linux implementation plus Netgem's new interactive digital TV software platform. story
Multimedia chip support for Linux-based set-top boxes -- Metro Link announced customer integration services for set-top boxes utilizing the new Sigma Designs EM8400 MPEG decoder chips and running Embedded Linux. Metro Link will also be developing drivers and a multimedia package for Sigma Designs' MPEG-2/DVD decoder, which is optimized for streaming video applications. story
MontaVista and Netgem collaborate on digital TV platforms -- the two companies have launched a joint technical and marketing strategic initiative that will integrate and promote Netgem's interactive software platform for digital TV combined with Montavista's Hard Hat Linux. story
