Defenestrating Windows -- Is Linux ready for the desktop? Early in 2000, LinuxDevices.com founder Rick Lehrbaum vowed to leave Windows behind -- not just in the embedded market, but with respect to his own desktop computer. On May 3, Microsoft Senior Vice President Craig Mundie gave a talk at the New York University Stern School of Business entitled "The Commercial Software Model," in which he attacked open source software (OSS) on multiple levels -- as an unhealthy business practice, as fostering software incompatibilities, and as stifling innovation. It should come as no surprise that both individuals and companies within the open source community responded immediately and vigorously to Mundie's remarks. Ready-to-use Java stack supports Embedded Linux apps -- DevelopOnline announced plans to provide the first online, ready-to-use integrated software stack for developing wireless and other embedded applications. The stack will be based on products from three companies and will be hosted on the company's online open hardware platforms. story

Edge router family employs Embedded Linux and IPv6 transition -- the product is offered as a complete hardware/software device for resellers, or as portable source code for OEMs that want to embed the technology into access point, gateway, and edge-node devices. story

Appliance development platform gains 3rd-party support -- Lineo plans to open up its SecureEdge appliance development platform to third party software solutions. Several applications are already based on the platform, including VPN Internet routers, firewalls, and network attached storage. story

Hard Hat Linux joint venture in China -- PocketIX Software Co. Ltd. will distribute and support Hard Hat Linux in China. PocketIX is a supplier of embedded software to manufacturers of Internet appliances, set-top boxes, and handheld computing devices in China. story

RedBoot debug/bootstrap firmware gains support -- Red Hat announced an expanded range of new OEM and development board ports for its RedBoot embedded debug and bootstrap solution. RedBoot is particularly useful for initializing, booting, and debugging Embedded Linux systems that do not have a PC-like BIOS. story

Axis releases latest Linux for ETRAX system-on-chip -- the new ETRAX OS is based on kernel 2.4 and supports new features of the 100LX processor, including its MMU and USB ports. Axis processors previously required uClinux, due to their lack of an MMU. story

Linux makes a move into handhelds -- according to this ZDNet article, a market study about to be released by International Data Corporation (IDC) includes Linux for the first time, as one of the handheld computer operating systems that are being tracked. story

Software Patents vs. Free Software -- in this essay, Bruce Perens, senior advisor for Hewlett-Packard and the primary author of the Open Source Definition, offers a perspective on software patents, the fundamental problems with them, and the hazard that they present to Free Software development. Also included, is a discussion on the upcoming summit meeting Perens has called on Free Software and The Law. story

Real-time and Embedded Systems Forum update -- Andrew Josey, Director of the Real-time and Embedded Systems Forum, reports on the most recent session of the Forum. story
