Linux LaunchPad blasts through time-to-market -- DSP Design announced a ready-to-use application development platform for embedded Linux based applications. The platform includes DSP Design's PC/104 single-board computer and a "proven" port of Embedded Linux. story

DSPLinux SDK version 1.0 ships -- RidgeRun announced the availability of their DSPLinux Software Development Kit (SDK) release 1.0 for embedded Linux based system development. This release incorporates the Linux 2.4 kernel and supports TI dual-core (RISC+DSP) system-on-chip processors. story

Motorola upgrades its Linux for telecom apps -- Motorola Computer Group says it will begin shipping version 2.0 of its Linux-based advanced high availability (HA) hardware and software platform in June. The system is targeted to high-end telecommunications applications. story

Latin America gets Linux-based set-top box -- an alliance of three companies has announced a new interactive set-top cable TV platform, based on Embedded Linux, which will be marketed throughout Mexico and Latin America. story

Nokia and Loki bringing games to Linux-based devices -- Nokia Home Communications announced that Loki Software's Linux games are going to be available on the the new Nokia Media Terminal. The device combines digital video broadcast (DVB), gaming, email, Web access, and personal video recorder (PVR) technology. story

AMI developing hardware diagnostic utility for Linux -- AMIDiag for Linux will support all major Linux distributions and will provide a structured diagnostic environment that AMI says is well suited to embedded Linux based applications. story

Open-source leaders fire new salvo at Microsoft -- calling Microsoft's way of doing business a "deliberately incompatible strategy," ten open-source luminaries lashed back at the software giant for its recent criticism of the centerpiece of the free-software movement: the general public license, or GPL. Worth reading! story

SOC-maker announces Embedded Linux alliance -- STMicroelectronics has designated MontaVista as its first and preferred supplier of Linux for its ST40 system-on-chip (SOC) processors. The ST40 is a family of SOC products based on the SuperH, 32-bit SH-4 core. story

New ZXE-x86 based embedded SBC runs Linux -- Zendex Corporation announced a new Linux-hosted single-board computer based on the ZF Micro Devices ZFx86 system-on-chip. story

Hard Hat Linux supports IBM network processor SOC -- MontaVista announced Hard Hat Linux support for IBM's recently announced IBM NP4GS3 network processor. story

IBM set-top-box chip targets Linux-based consumer apps -- IBM announced that MontaVista will provide Hard Hat Linux support for IBM's new STB034xx family of PowerPC based single-chip set-top box (STB) controllers. story

Nautilus creator Eazel shuts down, project continues -- Eazel, the company that created the Nautilus navigator for Linux, has closed its doors after an unsuccessful attempt to obtain further funding for its activities -- an apparent casualty of the current economic down-turn. story

Opera releases version 5.0 Web browser for Linux -- Opera Software launched Opera 5.0 for Linux, providing the Linux community with a fast, full-featured and stable Web browser that the company claims offers "an Internet experience for the Linux platform that is as hassle-free as on Windows." story

Toolkit supports Embedded Linux based appliances -- TUXIA announced the release of a development toolkit that enables easy, full-scale customization of embedded Linux software for Internet appliances and thin client devices. story

Embedded X gets added to Embedix embedded Linux -- Lineo announced that it will incorporate Metro Link's Micro-X Complete! software development kit into the Embedix development tool chain. story

Linux-based wireless webpad begins shipments -- frontpath, Inc. announced that it has begun shipping and volume production of its [Linux-based] premier wireless web device, the ProGear. The device is targeted to broadband-enabled vertical market segments including hospitality, education, and healthcare. story

New RTAI/RTLinux support for "small" PowerPC CPUs -- DENX Software Engineering has released patches that allow use of the RTAI and RTLinux real-time Linux extensions on Motorola's MPC8xx Embedded PowerPC processors. The patches have been tested successfully with Linux kernel 2.4.4. story

New support for Windows browser plugins on Embedded Linux -- CodeWeavers has announced a new product which lets you use Windows Web browser plugins on Linux browsers. The company expects the technology to be useful in embedded Linux based devices. story

Embedded Linux client solution for "thin" devices -- Tarantella launched a native code component designed for embedding in Linux based Internet appliances and network devices that can eliminate the need for a browser or GUI in the device. story

Open hardware for open software -- the "open design" LART processor and KSB boards (along with a User Guide, software, and cables) are now available fully assembled and tested from a commercial provider. story

Europe to form Embedded Linux Consortium chapter -- the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) is forming a European chapter, to be called the "ELC-Europe". An organizational meeting will be held next month in Augsberg, Germany. story

System-on-chip proto board gains Embedded Linux port -- AMIRIX Systems announced that it has ported Linux to a MIPS-based, system-on-chip prototype development board for Lexra, Inc. story

RedBoot debug/bootstrap firmware gains support -- Red Hat announced an expanded range of new OEM and development board ports for its RedBoot embedded debug and bootstrap solution for Linux (and other OS) based systems. story

The goal of the software is to provide a hardware independent, simple platform for home entertainment applications. story

IBM Linux Portal -- this new IBM-sponsored Web portal provides news, downloads of the latest Linux tools; and links to Linux content across the breadth of the ibm.com Web space as well as various other Linux sites.
