New Linux-PDA shown at Taiwan Intel Developers Forum -- MasterIA recently demonstrated a new thin and lightweight Linux-based PDA at the recent Intel Developer Forum held in Taiwan. The device, like many recently introduced PDAs, is based on Intel's StrongARM SA-1110 system-on-chip processor, and has a full-color 320x240 pixel TFT LCD screen plus expansion slots for CompactFlash Type II and SmartData cards. Embedded Linux runs next-generation oil rig controllers -- Varco International announced that it is standardizing on MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux embedded OS for its full line of oil rig floor equipment controllers. Varco's next-generation oil rig controllers will offer higher levels of functionality, remote access and control (via the Internet), and will also be easier to use (via a browser-based GUI). Story

Lineo changes CEOs -- Lineo has announced the appointment of Matt Harris as CEO. Harris assumes this position formerly held by Lineo founder Bryan Sparks. Harris formerly held the position of Lineo COO and was direcly responsible for all of Lineo's internal operations. He has extensive experience in finance, management, software engineering and law. Ericsson kills Linux-based Cordless Web Screen project -- Ericsson has decided to discontinue their Linux-based Cordless Web Screen project. The project had been heavily promoted by Ericsson and its technology partners throughout its development, both at trade shows and on the web. Story

Third way: Sharp pits Linux+Java against Palm/PocketPC -- Sharp began delivering Zaurus SL-5000D PDA developer units earlier this week. Simultaneously, a five-company press release carried the news that the SL-5000D's software stack is based on Embedix Plus PDA, which includes Lineo's Embedix, Trolltech's Qt/Embedded and Qt/Palmtop, Opera's web browser, and Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition JVM. Story

Real-Time and Embedded Linux (whitepaper) -- This two-part series at InformIT.com examines some of the reasons why Linux is making large inroads into the real-time and embedded systems market. Story

Prodigy to sell Linux-based Net appliance -- CNET reports that Internet service provider Prodigy Communications plans to start selling the $199 Linux-based Web-surfing appliance called the "NIC". Story

New Java OS runs on "bare metal", supports iPAQ -- SavaJe Technologies announced the release of version 1.0 of its SavaJe XE operating system. The company claims it is the first OS for embedded and handheld devices that supports a full desktop Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) environment rather than being limited to the J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition). The OS currently runs on the iPAQ. Story

Embedded Linux hands-on workshop to be held Nov. 26-29 -- A four day hands-on embedded Linux training workshop is being offered on the campus of the University of California, San Diego later this month. Story

New services & security support for Linux-based devices -- A provider of broadband networking and security software announced availability of its software on Red Hat and embedded Linux. Story

Mono Project aims to bring .Net to Linux -- ZDNet reports on the open-source community's attempt to bring Microsoft's .Net platform to Linux, an effort which is being spearheaded by Ximian. Story

New Linux-based embedded gateway and development kit -- emWare announced the release of DeviceGate-E, a highly compact Linux-based embedded gateway appliance, along with the DeviceGate-E Development Kit. The device and associated SDK offer manufacturers and systems integrators an easy way to add remote management capabilities to new and legacy electronic devices. Story

Macromedia offers Flash Player source code SDK for devices -- A new Macromedia Flash Player 5 Source Code SDK enables device developers to quickly and seamlessly port the Macromedia Flash Player to a wide range of devices and platforms. Story

TurboLinux Systems Korea to distribute RTLinux in Asia -- Through an alliance between FSMLabs and Turbolinux Systems Korea (a Samsung affiliate), FSMLabs' RTLinux Pro real-time OS will be sold and supported in Korea and elsewhere in the Asia/Pacific region. Story

Introduction to XFree86 4.x (tutorial) -- This tutorial at IBM's developerWorks website steps you through the process of getting XFree86 4.x, the standard free X server for Linux, up and running. It covers X usage fundamentals, including running X applications remotely, securing X, and configuring X applications using the X resource database. Story

Red Hat's New ext3 Journaling File System (whitepaper) -- Red Hat has published an online technical whitepaper about the new ext3 journaling file system which is now available as a standard feature of Red Hat Linux 7.2 Story
