New website launches Desktop Linux revolution -- DeviceForge LLC, the parent of LinuxDevices.com, is pleased to announce a new family member: DesktopLinux.com -- a major new website exclusively devoted to the use of Linux as a desktop operating system for personal and business purposes. The site features news, opinions, HOWTOs, FAQs, product previews/reviews, product listings, a discussion forum, and links to other web resources, all focused on using -- or learning to use -- Linux as a desktop operating system. Growing interest in Embedded Linux as a PDA operating system -- The use of Linux as an operating system for handheld computers and PDAs has received growing attention of late. Agenda began shipping the VR-3 Linux PDA earlier this year, G.Mate has announced their plan to ship their YOPY Linux PDA to customers later this month, and Sharp began supplying developer units of their Zaurus Linux PDA several weeks ago. Mobile phone for "tweens market" runs Embedded Linux -- Telepong Inc. has announced the development of a prototype mobile phone aimed at the "tweens market". The company is targeting users who mainly use their phones for non-voice applications such as text messaging and gaming. The device runs on a Linux-based operating system and features a built-in GPRS module, a 65K color display, and a WAP 1.2.1. browser. Story

New version of Microwindows now available for download -- Greg Haerr, leader of the Microwindows project, announced that Microwindows version 0.89pre8 is released and available for ftp download. According to Haerr, a large number of enhancements are included. Story

BusyBox 0.60.2 released -- BusyBox maintainer Erik Andersen announced the release of BusyBox version 0.60.2. BusyBox is a popular small footprint utility-set for embedded Linux based systems and devices. Story

A human sounding voice on every computing device? -- Cepstral, LLC announced the release of Theta, a software engine for deploying high quality spoken language output within resource-limited Linux-based devices. Theta's small footprint is said to allow voice delivery on small devices, as well as multi- port installations on servers. Story

Free 802.1X Linux authentication S/W secures networks -- Meetinghouse Data Communications, Inc. announced a freely downloadable network authentication software package for Linux based devices. The client-side or "supplicant" software package communicates with an 802.1X server which authenticates LAN users during login and network sessions. Story

Nat Semi picks PIXIL for info appliance design support -- Century Embedded Technologies announced that National Semiconductor will be bundling an evaluation version of Century's Linux-based PIXIL Thin Client development software as part of National's Geode family reference platforms for thin clients and personal Internet access devices. Advanced filesystem implementor's guide, Part 7: introducing ext3 -- This article is Part 7 in IBM's series about the new advanced filesystems that are included in Linux 2.4. This installment takes a look at ext3, a new improved version of ext2 with journaling capabilities. Story

Linux to dominate high-end computing within 3 years -- According to a recently published research report from market analyst Aberdeen Group, Linux will dominate most segments of high performance computing (HPC) by 2004. The report is part of Aberdeen's Linux and Open Source Software practice, which covers emerging and established Linux hardware and software suppliers. Story

Is open source fading away? -- CNET News.com's Stephen Shankland conjectures that the ideological purity of the open-source software business is being diluted by a new era of pragmatism, as start-ups adjust to the economic slump. Story
