RidgeRun GPLs portable Linux Bluetooth stack -- the company needed a Linux Bluetooth stack for the ARM and MIPS platforms for their DSPLinux product, so they decided to modify the Axis Bluetooth stack to be portable, and give the result back to the Open Source community. story

Linux Journal announces "Editors' Choice Awards" -- the annual ballots have been cast and counted, and the winners are decided! Of particular interest to the embedded Linux community: Best Desktop Environment, KDE; Best Embedded Development Tool, Microwindows; Best Real-Time Tool, RedBoot. story

Hard Hat Linux nabs Penguin Playoff Award -- and in another set of awards, MontaVista Software's Hard Hat Linux received the award for "Best Embedded Solution" in the Penguin Playoff Awards sponsored by Linux Journal and Linux Business Expo. story

Linux company targets $800M kiosk market -- TeamLinux has announced a strategic partnership with Bruewer Woodwork Manufacturing Company, a maker of kiosk cabinetry, in an effort to establish TeamLinux as a leader in the $800M worldwide kiosk market. story

Key-sized Flash drive plugs directly into USB connector -- ei Corporation has announced the "Q" drive, a tiny USB device that makes data storage both mobile and wearable. It plugs directly into a USB connector without requiring any additional cables, adapters, or power. story

Free beta CD player/burner software for Linux -- MusicMatch announced a free beta version of its music juke box program for Linux. "MusicMatch Jukebox" allows music files to be played, recorded, organized, and discovered on Linux systems. Music formats supported include CDs, MP3s, and WAV files. story

TimeSys establishes presence in Japan -- the new TimeSys sales and support office, located in suburban Tokyo, in the college-town Kichijoji, will target the automotive, consumer electronic, telecommunications, and aerospace industries. story

Icon expands Embedded Linux software development services -- Icon Laboratories is expanding its Embedded Linux development services. The company specializes in telecommunications, broadband wireless networking, and set-top box projects, aiming to reduce time-to-market while allowing the client to maintain control and ownership of their product. story

Linux-based Internet appliance wins "Best of Comdex" -- more awards: Gateway's new Linux-based Connected Touch Pad was the recipient of this year's "Best of Comdex" (Fall, 2000) award in the Consumer Product division. The winners were chosen by a team of editors from CNET and ZDNet. story

Terminal/console access server taps hardened Linux -- Cyclades has announced a new terminal and console access server in a 1U rackmount form-factor that uses MontaVista Software's Hard Hat Linux as its embedded operating system. The device is used remotely and securely manage serial console ports in server farms. This article describes the device and explains why Cyclades decided to embed Linux. story

MPEG video support for Linux-based set-top boxes -- Sigma Designs, a specialist in digital video decoder solutions, has provided MPEG technology for the new National Geode SP1SC10 Set-Top Box reference platform. The MPEG software supports Sigma's EM8400 MPEG decoder chip, which forms the basis for the platform's video delivery from digital TV broadcast, Video-On-Demand streaming, and DVD playback capabilities. story

High availability Linux solution targets telecom/'net apps -- TimeSys and GoAhead Software are collaborating on a software solution that will enable high reliability systems for the telecom and Internet markets. story

uClinux does real-time? -- uClinux can apparently be mixed together with real-time add-ons such as RTLinux and RTAI, as indicated by a recent message at realtimelinux.org. story

Linux-based Bluetooth-enabled cable modem solution -- Texas Instruments and Jungo Software Technologies are partnering to support Jungo's Linux residential gateway software on TI's broadband cable modems. The two companies are demonstrating the technology at the California Cable Television Association's Western Show. story

Linux gains government agency support worldwide -- eWEEK's Peter Galli reports on the growing tendency of government officials throughout the world to support Linux and other open source software. story
