ELC Chairman: address to the ELC meeting at ESC -- This talk on the state of Embedded Linux and the status and goals of the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) was given by Inder Singh, ELC Chairman (and CEO of LynuxWorks), at the first bi-annual membership meeting of the ELC held on September 28, 2000 in San Jose, CA story EMBLIX Vice Chairman: address to the ELC meeting at ESC -- a presentation about the status and goals of the Japan Embedded Linux Consortium (EMBLIX) was given by John Cheuck, EMBLIX Vice Chairman (and Vice President, Embedded Division, Turbolinux Japan), at the first bi-annual membership meeting of the ELC held on September 28, 2000 in San Jose, CA story Notes from the ELC meeting -- Forrest Cook of Linux Weekly News attended the Embedded Linux Consortium meeting earlier this week at the Embedded Systems Conference, and wrote a brief article with his impressions of the meeting. Vendor-neutral hands-on Embedded Linux Workshop -- A unique workshop will offer hands-on Embedded Linux training in conjunction with the October 27th Embedded Linux Expo & Conference (ELEC) near Boston, MA. The workshop takes place the day before the ELEC, on October 26th. story Newly open protocol facilitates low-end networking -- emWare Inc. has released its emNet networking protocol as an open, royalty-free standard. The simple and lightweight networking protocol enables access to everyday devices based on low-end microcontrollers. story PowerPC 8260 SBC fits on PC/104 mechanical format -- Embedded Planet's new single-board computer is based Motorola's MPC8260 PowerQUICC II processor, and fits in the footprint of a PC/104 module. story Euro developers conference to highlight Embedded Linux -- ACTIVE Exhibitions Europe announced the technical program for the AC Developers' Conference & Expo that will be held November 6-9 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The conference features a keynote presentation on the Embedded Linux Market and the benefits of using Embedded Linux. story Linux clusters probe virus molecules -- The National Center for Macromolecular Imaging (NCMI) at Baylor College of Medicine is going to use clustered computers in its world-renowned molecular imaging research center. A cutting-edge technique then allows researchers to view the viruses as if they were locks. By properly studying these "locks," they hope to find the "keys" to opening and destroying them. story Microsoft bails out [Linux vendor] Corel -- ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports that Microsoft has purchased $135 million worth of stock in struggling Canadian software maker [and Linux supplier] Corel, in a move characterized as a strategic alliance targeting Microsoft's .Net software development platform. story FSMLabs releases RTLinux version 3.0-pre8 -- RTLinux 3.0-pre8 is now available. The developers expect that it will be the last pre-release before a final 3.0, and request that RTLinux users and enthusiasts review it right away. story Analog Devices debuts single-chip "Internet Modem" -- Analog Devices has taken the DSP Modem one step further by squeezing a TCP/IP protocol stack into the DSP's control software along with all the usual modem functions. "Look Ma -- no computer needed for Internet access!" story The DiskOnChip GPL-compliant solution -- finally! -- A fully GPL-compliant solution for installing and running a bootable DiskOnChip flash disk in a Linux-based system is now available directly from M-Systems. The solution is offered in binary form (without source), and provides two approaches to incorporating DiskOnChip into the Linux system. story Who is Epitera, and what is AbsoluteX? -- Epitera plans to market a set of programs and utilities that turn the elusive goal of a user-friendly end-user Linux experience into a reality. The foundation of those efforts is a new open source GUI toolkit called AbsoluteX, which will be demonstrated publicly for the first time next week and will be made available for public download (as LGPL) in mid-November. story Nanux or Nanix? -- Every day the web site at www.nanux.com gets visitors looking for an exciting new product. . . On some days, emails are backed up waiting for more information about this newest embedded Linux. This would seem the dream of most business owners! However at Nanux, it is not. story frontpath announces Linux-based portable information appliance -- S3 subsidiary frontpath announced ProGear, a high-end wireless Linux-based portable information appliance targeted to specialized vertical market segments. The device supports various rich media formats, includes a 10.4" TFT display, and obtains user input via either virtual keyboard or handwriting recognition on its touchscreen. story

Newlib -- an open source C library for embedded systems -- Newlib is a C library intended for use on embedded systems that was developed by Cygnus (now part of Red Hat). story FREESCO, an open source network router with static routing -- FREESCO is said to be similar to the Linux Router Project (LRP) software, but easier to install. FREESCO is based on the Linux operating system and incorporates many of the features of a full operating system into software that fits on a single 1.44 meg floppy diskette. story Linux Free Support -- Linux Free Support offers free technical support for individuals in the Linux community. story
