Sharp hones new Linux handheld -- ZDNet's Richard Shim reports on the impending release by Sharp Electronics of a new Linux-based PDA in the U.S. The consumer-electronics giant is expected to make the new Linux handheld available to developers in the coming weeks, and the consumer version is expected in the first quarter of '02. Linux PDA Focus Group to be held in NJ on Friday, Oct. 12 -- Want a free Sharp Linux PDA developer kit (which includes a Linux-based PDA) plus $100 cash? Attend a Linux PDA focus group being held this Friday, October 12, at the North American headquarters of Sharp Electronics in Mahwah, NJ. Story

Microwindows founder launches thin client Linux solution -- Century Embedded Technologies unveiled PIXEL Thin Client, a new Linux-based thin client software package that is said to offer PC-like capabilities in small footprint, resource-constrained devices. Story

MyLinux Pocket Linux Workstation beta units offered for sale -- The MyLinux Pocket Linux Workstation (PLW) project is now accepting advanced orders for the beta version of the device. The PLW is a 100% Open Source, custom embedded Linux handheld computer that is small enough to fit in your pocket yet powerful enough to serve as your workstation. Story

TI adds Linux support to OMAP wireless platform -- Texas Instruments has announced that its OMAP wireless architecture will support Embedded Linux, thereby providing solutions for 2.5 and 3G mobile devices. RidgeRun's DSPLinux will be the first embedded Linux support available for the OMAP platform. Story

Translator runs x86 binaries on MIPS CPUs "at native speeds" -- Transitive Technologies announced availability of what is claimed to be the first CPU translation and optimization software engine that enables x86 software binaries to run transparently and efficiently on MIPS32 and MIPS64 processors. Gateway and browser software support WAP 2.0 -- Jataayu Software of Bangalore, India recently announced the release of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) 2.0 versions of its gateway and browser software. Jataayu currently supports Linux and plans to support embedded Linux in the near future. Story

HP Supports Royalty Free Standards for Web Infrastructure -- Bruce Perens of Hewlett-Packard clarifies HP's position with respect to patents and royalty bearing standards in the next generation web infrastructure. Story

Compaq to bundle Jeode JVM on new iPAQs -- Compaq is set to ship Java technology, in the form of Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition, on every unit of Compaq's new iPAQ Pocket PC H3800 handheld computer. The news is significant in that Java-based PDA apps can be expected to be easily portable to (if not immediately usable on) Linux-based PDAs which have JVMs, such as Sharp's upcoming Linux/Java PDA. Wind River divests itself of the FreeBSD project -- An article at SlashDot reports that Wind River Systems, who had acquired BSDi's software assets earlier this year, including a team of FreeBSD developers, has laid off those developers and decided to divest itself of the FreeBSD project. The article includes a question and answer interview with Wind River's PR department. Story
