North Carolina State Univ standardizes on open source software -- Red Hat announced an initiative with North Carolina State University, to standardize their College of Engineering academic computing environment on open source technologies. The initiative will expose thousands of engineering students to Linux and other open source software. story

WAP goes Open Source -- 3G LAB announced the launch of Alligata Server -- the world's first supported Open Source integrated WAP & SMS gateway. The Alligata mobile Internet server is downloadable for free from 3G LAB's website. story

Lineo offers Real-time Linux development training seminar -- this training course for the development and implementation of hard real-time Linux solutions will cover a variety of topics, including kernel modules, device drivers, RTAI, RTLinux, scheduling and more. story

Linux gains ground in emerging Korean SmartPhone market -- this translation of an article which appeared in the Korean edition of eWEEK sheds light on the emerging market for Embedded Linux in Korea. The article includes some interesting Embedded Linux market size estimates. story

STMicro announces latest x86 System-on-Chip devices -- 0.25µ fabrication technology allows three new PC architecture SOC devices to offer higher integration, lower power consumption, and lower cost than their predecessors. All support Embedded Linux. story

Workshops on Real-Time and QoS technology -- these workshops, offered by TimeSys Corporation, were previously only offered to government groups and large corporations. story

SiS "boots" PC BIOS out of the system -- SiS claims to have the first BIOS-free, diskless, single-flash-device commercial PC architecture platform in the world. This feat was accomplished through cooperation with two open source projects: the LinuxBIOS Project, and the Linux Memory Technology Device Project. story

World's first Embedded Linux magazine -- the publisher of Linux Journal has announced the launch of a magazine focusing on the use of Open Source software and Linux in embedded systems. The new print publication, entitled Embedded Linux Journal, debuts in January. Subscriptions are free to qualified professionals. story

Jabber Open Source Project surpasses 50 sub-projects -- Jabber offers a flexible platform for system-to-system messaging applications and services, for both end-user and embedded applications. story

Linux invades Jim Henson's Muppet Shop -- Michelle Head, editor of LinuxNews, interviewed some folks at the Jim Henson Creature Shop about their use of Linux in the Henson Performance Control System. The Creature Shop has been funding the development of some interesting GUI and real-time Linux technologies which are being contributed back to the open source software pool. story

the online Embedded Systems Bibliography -- this online and continuously updated version of the bibliography from the book "Programming Embedded Systems in C and C++" lists books, periodicals, conferences, websites, and newsgroups of interest to embedded systems hardware and software developers. story

Boa -- a single-tasking HTTP server -- unlike traditional web servers, Boa does not fork for each incoming connection, nor does it fork many copies of itself to handle multiple connections. story

Kannel: an Open Source WAP and SMS gateway -- as a WAP gateway, Kannel talks to the phone using the WAP protocol stack, and translates the requests it receives to normal HTTP. Kannel also serves as an SMS gateway. story

deepLINUX Embedded Linux Toolkit -- the dELT toolkit can be used to create embedded configurations as small as 2MB, or fully-functional, Web-Interfaced Thin Client solutions that launch remote applications in only 16MB. Best of all, it's free! story

floppyfw -- another one-floppy static router -- floppyfw is a static router with the firewall capabilities of Linux. Although it is called a firewall, it does not have all the functionality we are expecting from a firewall of today. It is basically a "screening router" or "package filtering firewall". story
