Sony unveils new Linux-based PVR -- Sony rolled out a new Internet-enabled personal video recorder (PVR), dubbed the 'Cocoon'. Like TiVo, which pioneered the PVR market, the Cocoon is powered by an embedded Linux OS (read the article to find out whose). Story
Royal Philips unveils Linux-based multimedia gadget platform -- Royal Philips Electronics announced Pronto++, a new digital multimedia reference platform based on Intel's PXA250 XScale architecture processors. The combination hardware/software/services platform is intended to help developers create next-generation interactive digital audio and video devices, and includes PJava-based apps running on an embedded Linux OS. Philips has already used the platform to develop several consumer electronics products (with embedded Linux inside), the first of which will be announced later this month. Story
'Embed with Linux?' seminar in UK -- A seminar in Reading, UK on Oct. 31 will explore the use of Linux as a target environment for real-time embedded applications. Topics will include what real-time Linux is, open and commercial products for embedded Linux, and integration with other platforms. Story
New XScale telecom 'control plane' SOC gains Linux support -- MontaVista Software announced plans to support Intel's new IXC1100 control plane processor, a highly integrated system-on-a-chip designed for use in next-generation telecommunication equipment such as multi-service switches, VoIP media gateways, and wireless infrastructure. GNU Bayonne 1.0 released -- After two years of active development, the GNU project has released GNU Bayonne, Version 1.0. GNU Bayonne, licensed freely under the GNU GPL, allows small businesses, large enterprises, and commercial telephone carriers to create, deploy, and manage their own web-integrated telephony voice response solutions.
