Red Hat unveils new Embedded Linux toolkit
At this week's Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, MA, Red Hat unveiled a major upgrade to its Embedded Linux Developer Suite. The packaged offering combines new versions of Red Hat's embedded Linux platform, development tools, runtime technologies, and support services.

EarthLink ups the ante on design contest
EarthLink's R&D team is hosting a contest to heighten awareness of the emerging automotive telematics market and foster development of the best business and consumer applications. Developers are invited to submit proposals for applications that could run on EarthLink's experimental Linux-based in-vehicle wireless computing system.

Another new Linux-based Korean PDA expected soon
Mizi Research has a contract to supply its Embedded Linux operating system, Linuette, to CIIT for use as the operating system within a newly developed multimedia PDA.

Lineo and Wipro form strategic alliance
Lineo and Wipro have announced a worldwide strategic partnership to jointly address business opportunities based on Embedded Linux technology. The alliance represents Wipro's first global strategic partnership in the embedded systems space, and Lineo's first strategic alliance with a software services provider.

ACTIVE Exhibitions Europe has issued a call for papers for Europe's first Embedded Linux Expo & Conference (ELEC). The event will take place in Milan, Italy, November 26-29, 2001.

LinuxWorld Conference & Expo announces awards
IDG World Expo announced the winners of awards recognizing achievements by the open source community, at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo last week in San Francisco. The awards included the $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award, the Open Source Product Excellence Awards, and the OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award.

Lineo announces availability of GPL compliance toolset
Lineo announced that a new Embedix GPL Compliance Toolset will be available later this month. The toolset's purpose, according to Lineo, is "to guide embedded systems developers through the extensive maze of software code license compliance issues" and to help individuals and companies "make an educated decision to release code to the open source community or keep it proprietary."

Motorola selects Embedix embedded Linux for set-top box
Motorola's broadband communications division has selected a version of Lineo's Embedix as the initial Embedded Linux OS for its DCT5000 family of interactive digital multimedia set-top appliances. Consumer shipments of DCT5000s with Embedix inside are expected to begin shipping during Q1 of 2002.
