ART Linux is a Real-Time extension to Linux, developed by Youichi Ishiwata at ETL. It is inspired by RT-Linux. But it has the following advantages:

ART-Linux allows you to re-use existing Linux device drivers and application programs and easily achieve proper real time performance.
Source level compatibility of device drivers with ordinary Linux. If you just re-compile your device driver, it can be called by a real-time task without breaking the real-time operation.
No priority inversion. The priority inheritance mechanism works across real-time tasks and ordinary tasks, automatically solving the priority inversion problem.
Binary level compatibility of user programs with ordinary Linux. You do not even have to re-compile your program in order to use it with a real time task.
Avoids uncertainty of real-time execution due to interrupts. ART-Linux treats interrupts with a periodical strategy.
Real-time task execution at user priviledge level (non-priviledge mode). You get full benefit of memory protection. Real time tasks are now safer.

IMPORTANT LICENSE NOTICE:

ART-Linux is a "patch" against original Linux. Currently it is NOT submitted to GPL. The patch (containing code originally developed by Ishiwata, exclusively) is created as a part of his duty as a national employee using govermental facilities, and hence the governmental intellectual property regulations apply to this case. We want to solve this problem asap. because we understand the importance and the public benefit of the movement such as represeted by GPL. By the time we complete the beta testing and try to do a public release, this problem should have been solved. We think beta test period can be managed in conformance to the above mentioned regulations, which requires signed license agreements.

We heve started distributing the patch for beta testing. This release is a patch and against Linux 2.0.36 and works only for uniprocessors.
