Billed as the largest open-source gathering yet to be held in Hong Kong and China, OSSummit Asia is the first joint conference between The Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation. ASF helps coordinate open-source software projects related to the Apache server and other Apache technologies, and the Eclipse Foundation oversees open-source projects related to the Eclipse platform for cross-vendor tools integration. Eclipse cross-platform development tools are used by nearly every commercial embedded Linux OS and tools supplier.
OSSummit Asia will offer both general sessions and hands-on, certified training classes. The presentations will cover open-source issues such as new technologies, development methods, and marketing and licensing issues, with a special focus on activities in Asia. Topics include various ASF and Eclipse-wide projects, from the Apache HTTP server to the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF), plus discussions of Web Services, Web 2.0, and programming in Java, Perl, Python, Ruby and PHP.
Here is a sampling of the major OSSummit Asia presentations: - Opening Keynote: The open source spirit and the future of China's Internet -- Li Gong, chairman and CEO of Mozilla Online Ltd (China-based Mozilla subsidiary)
- Why Google Likes the Apache License -- Greg Stein, ASF chairman and Uber Tech Lead/Manager at Google
- The Eclipse Open Innovation Network -- Mike Milinkovich, executive director, the Eclipse Foundation
- Eclipse, Equinox and OSGi -- Jeff McAffer, leader of Eclipse Equinox OSGi, RCP and Orbit teams, and senior technical staff member, IBM Rational
- Apache Maven best practices -- Brett Porter, member of the Apache Software Foundation, and vice president of engineering, DevZuz
- Open Source in China -- J Aaron Farr, ASF treasurer and member of board of directors
- Distributed Agile Development -- Jervis Liu, active proponent of the Apache CXF project, and senior software engineer, IONA Technologies R&D
OSSummit Asia is sponsored by Google, Mozilla, Sun, Sybase, Red Hat, Iona Technologies, Covalent Technologies, DevZuz, Morph Labs, Outblaze, Sopera, and Webtide.
Pricing ranges from $425 (3 hours) to $625 (6 hours) for the opening training day on Nov. 26, and then $1,250 for the following three-day conference. For registration and more information on OSSummit Asia, click here.
