LinuxWorld organizers are still seeking innovative embedded Linux devices for the "Linux Garage," a new area that debuts at this year's San Francisco event. Additionally, the Aug. 4-7 show will feature a conference on mobile Linux, to be sponsored by Access and other leading mobile Linux companies, organizers have announced.

Melinda Kendall, GM of LinuxWorld, likens the Garage to a "dot org" pavillion for hardware, in terms of enabling small and pre-profit companies to demonstrate interesting technical accomplishments. IDG World Expo announced the Linux Garage last month, but still has room for a few more devices, Kendall said. More details and a very brief application form may be found here. In the interests of full disclosure, although not affiliated with IDG World Expo, LinuxDevices has agreed to help judge entries. Thus, your application could also lead to your device being featured on this website.

As for the Mobile Linux Conference, it will feature technical training, strategic insights, and hands-on experience in mobile Linux development, says IDG. The event will be split into two main tracks:

Mobile Linux platforms -- Explores the evolution of both commercial and community-based standards, architectures, and middleware stacks, including underlying technologies like multi-core support, and UI and multimedia frameworks
Building mobile Linux applications -- Examines the methods used by OEMs, operators, ISVs, and individual developers to create mobile Linux applications. Covers Linux distributions and toolsets, as well as Java, web technologies, and scripting technologies. Explores topics including device openness, community and operator/OEM developer programs, security and application signing, and end-to-end applications development

The Mobile Linux Conference will be sponsored primarily by mobile-phone stack firm Access, with Motorola, Nokia, Trolltech, and Wind River also participating.

Stated conference chair Bill Weinberg, of Linuxpundit.com, "Linux has quietly been making inroads in embedded and mobile marketplace for some time now, and it has the potential to achieve end-to-end acceptance with a unified code base and development paradigm."
