Japanese embedded Linux house Lineo Solutions has demonstrated embedded Linux technology that it hopes can meet one of the high-priority requirements outlined by the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF): hard, real-time performance. Lineo Solutions demonstrated its real-time Linux implementation running on a Via Epia-ME6000 at the Boot Fest session of CELF Plenary Meeting held in Las Vegas, January 8, 2004.

The Epia-ME6000 is a very low-cost x86-based board for which Lineo recently launched a board support package. Lineo hopes that providing its real-time solution on the x86 platform will enable a broad range of embedded Linux developers to evaluate its technology.

"[This] should provide a common platform for the developer of embedded Linux systems and applications in the industry and in the Linux community to evaluate the technologies and implementations in satisfying CELF requirements," noted Lineo Solutions CEO Yoshinobu Ushiyama.

Deterministic time metrics of the systems demonstrated were as follows, according to Lineo: (timer clock accuracy 1 microsecond, jitter 1 microsecond)

Interrupt Response Time -- 5 microseconds
Task Latency Time -- 4 microseconds
Periodic Task Latency Time -- 20 microseconds

Additionally, Lineo recently contributed SuperH patches to the CELF Linux Source Tree. Lineo's SuperH patches were demonstrated by SuperH chip maker Renesas and by Mitsubishi Electric at the Boot Fest.

Lineo says it plans to contribute support for other architectures to the CELF Source Tree, as well.
