| Linux powers new Motorola "smart gateway" reference design |

Motorola announced a new reference platform for developers of residential and SOHO (small office / home office) gateway products. The "Smart Gateway 857 IAD" platform supports bridging and routing, hardware-based VPN security, packet telephony, and wireless access capabilities, and can be used as the basis for xDSL modems and routers, Ethernet routers, and voice-enabled integrated access devices (IADs), the company said.
The reference design is implemented as a ready-to-use single-board computer (shown below) built around Motorola's PowerPC-based MPC857DSL PowerQUICC embedded processor. Also included are a Motorola MPC180 security processor, 32MB SDRAM, and 8MB Flash memory, four 10/100 Ethernet ports, one 10BaseT Ethernet port, and one ADSL-RT port. Support for 802.11b wireless can be added via the onboard PCMCIA slot. Packet telephony support is also optionally available for four analog phone lines via an onboard daughter module (shown in the photo).

The platform is supported by an Embedded Linux operating system, software development tools, and communications protocol stacks from Motorola's Metrowerks subsidiary. The communications stacks include xDSL and Ethernet communications and management, security stacks for firewall, and optional VPN, wireless stacks for optional IEEE 802.11b LAN connectivity, and voice stacks for voice over IP (VoIP), the company said.
"Embedded Linux is the optimal platform for creating broadband CPE applications, providing a stable, open-source, and scalable development environment," said Berardino Baratta, vice president of the Metrowerks Linux Solutions Group and Metrowerks chief technology officer.
The Smart Gateway 857 IAD reference platform is available now from Metrowerks, and is priced at $1000 (USD), the company said. It includes a reference board, documentation, schematics, support software, and a bill of materials.
