Updated Sep. 17, 2003 -- Century Software has released source code for its PIXIL product line under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and launched a website in support of the release. Century calls PIXIL "a complete suite of commercial-ready embedded software solutions for advanced Internet appliances" such as PDAs, WebPads, set-top boxes, cellular phones, smart handhelds, and thin clients.

"Previously, the only open portions of PIXIL were the Microwindows component, (already MPL/GPL), along with a few of the basic applications," according to Greg Haerr, CEO of Century Software. "Now, the whole shebang is opened, and placed under the GPL. We're of course retaining rights to PIXIL, and make available a commercial version (same source) that allows companies to pay to have a commercial license agreement with us, if they want to."

PIXIL combines a graphical windowing environment, widget set, operating environment, and numerous applications into a tightly integrated collection built on the open standards of embedded Linux, according to Century. PIXIL is based on Microwindows, a screentop window manager, FLNX-based widget set, and a set of applications including PIM Suite, ViewML browser, MP3 player, MPEG viewer, Macromedia flash player, Doom, games, system and network configuration applications and more.

According to Century, the source tree builds everything from a top-level make, and works for Linux desktop X11 and framebuffer, as well as supporting cross-compilation for ARM processors. The environment allows applications to run on Microwindows, while most of the applications built around FLTK can be built for the X11 environment as well.

Demonstration binaries for iPaq and Zaurus will be available shortly, while source code is available now, says Century.

With the release, Century has launched the PIXIL open-source Website. Besides lots of neat animated screen shots, the site offers downloads, news, and licensing information for Century's free and commercial versions of PIXIL.
