SuperH embedded Linux dev tool adds JTAG, ICE debugger

Lineo Solutions will add support for a JTAG in-circuit emulator (ICE) debugger from Kyoto Micro Computer's (KMC) to its uLinux Elite development environment. The support, expected late April, will work with two System-on-Chips (SoCs) based on SuperH RISC cores, and several development boards from SuperH chipmaker Renesas.

According to Lineo Solutions, KMC's Partner-JET JTAG ICE debugger provides unique and strong Linux debugging functions. It can be used as an in-circuit emulator to debug hardware, the kernel, and the application stack, including applications executed in virtual memory.

KMC claims its Partner-Jet offers tripled-to-quadrupled control speed and baud rate compared with other JTAG ICE debuggers. It provides greatly increased trace memory, and a connecting interface for optional functions. It supports multi-cores and can debug multiple CPUs simultaneously. Partner-Jet also provides "the world's first complete MMU support and hardware debugging of embedded OS," according to KMC.

Lineo Solutions says its uLinux Elite provides a pre-patched environment providing realtime extended debugging. The company expects Partner-Jet's "fast interface" to make real-time debugging "even smoother." The company also touts a special display style that it claims simplifies checking interrupt occurrence/response processing status or its time measurement, and performance status including each Realtime thread's CPU occupying time.

The Lineo Solutions development environment will be based on its uLinux Elite/BSP, and will support the Renesas SH7751R, a highly integrated 32-bit RISC microprocessor based on a SuperH RISC CPU core and targeting low-power multimedia appliances, telematics, and networking devices. It will also support the SH7760 'Camelot,' a low-cost and high-integration system-on-chip processor supporting clock rates up to 200MHz and targeting next generation automotive telematics products.

The environment will work with KMC's Partner-Jet JTAG ICE debugger, on Renesas development boards such as the RTS7751R2D Consumer Electronics Edition 2D graphics board, targeting portable and car video players, wireless TV-phones, point-of-sales terms, and broadcasting systems for buildings, aircraft, and trains, and the MS7760CP01P Consumer Electronics Edition audio board targeting handheld terminals, point-of-sale (POS) devices, and industrial applications.
