Access will showcase its Linux-based mobile phone middleware and related applications at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona next week. New products include a website transcoder for mobile phones and a DVB-H version of its NetFront Browser.

Tokyo, Japan-based Access is known for its Access Linux Platform (ALP) mobile phone middleware and application stack, as well as its NetFront Browser, a lightweight, Linux-based mobile browser that is used in the Amazon Kindle electronic reader (pictured at left). In December, Access announced that ALP was being evaluated for use as a common operating system (OS) platform for NEC, Panasonic, and Esteemo phones sold by NTT DoCoMo and other mobile carriers.

Here are some highlights of Access demonstrations on tap for Barcelona:

NetFront Browser Mobile Flash -- Access will showcase a new NetFront module from Digital Aria called Mobile Flash. The player is said to be optimized for viewing of YouTube Flash videos.
NetFront Transcoder -- Announced in October and expected to ship in May, NetFront Transcoder is a server solution that can convert and edit desktop-format web sites for mobile devices. Supporting JavaScript, CSS, and Flash, Transcoder enables web sites to be optimized for mobile handsets.
NetFront Browser DTV Profile DVB-H Edition -- Announced in November, this mobile TV application combines NetFront Browser DTV Profile with ExpWay's Electronic Service Guide (ESG) product for mobile DVB-H and 3G networks.
NetFront Browser Widgets -- Access will showcase its mobile widget framework, which is said to use open web technologies to support the creation and use of dynamic web applications with rich user interfaces. Widgets are available for content such as movies, photos, and maps.
NGN (Next Generation Network) -- Access will demonstrate internetworking devices using the Linux-compatible ZebOS switch/router middleware from its U.S. subsidiary IP Infusion. Access will also show a wireless multimedia home network based on its NetFront Living Connect multimedia networking middleware, which is compliant with the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard.
