Comtrend showcased a new Linux-based multimedia IPTV set-top box (STB) at last month's China Broadband & IPTV conference. The CT-702 "Triple Play STB" delivers broadband TV, video-on-demand (VOD), Internet, and voice-over-IP (VoIP) "triple play" (video/data/voice) services, according to Comtrend.

The CT-702 is based on an Intel IXP425 XScale processor, and provides high-definition (HD) video technology, enabling it to be used with HDTV monitors, Comtrend says. In addition, the device provides VoIP and broadband router functions.

Key features of the CT-702 are listed as:

Embedded Linux OS
Video decoding for MPEG-1/2 MP@HL, MPEG-4 ASP@L5, and Microsoft WMV9
Supports High Definition video quality
Audio decoding for MP3, AAC, and Microsoft WMA
Supports streaming protocols RTP and RTSP
802.11 a/b/g Access Point with integrated router
Supports Voice codec (G.711, G.723, G.729)
Supports SIP/MGCP/H.323 protocols
Software is upgradeable via TFTP
On Screen Display (OSD) with trick mode
QoS supports 802.1p and DiffServ
IR receiver for remote control

"Advanced" HTML/Web standards support is provided by means of the Espial Escape browser, according to Comtrend. Among other benefits, this allows Comtrend's customers to create revenue-generating services. For example, telcos and operators can develop standards-based interactive portal services to deliver news, weather, sports or games to the device.
