Linux-based NAS expands to four bays

Qnap Systems introduced a four-bay version of its Linux-based line of multifunction NAS (network-attached storage) devices. The TS-409 Pro Turbo NAS offers a hot-swappable HDD design, RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 6/ 5+ support, and online RAID capacity expansion and level migration, says Qnap.

The new four-bay TS-409 Pro Turbo targets small businesses and corporate users with demanding data storage and security needs, the company said. It succeeds Qnap's earlier TS-109 and TS-209 systems, single- and dual-drive models, respectively, meant for small businesses and SOHO users.

The new TS-409 offers more extensive backup and security functions than the RAID 1-compatible 109 and 209 versions. Its support for RAID 5 and 6 provides continuous service even when one or two hard disks physically fail at the same time, says Qnap. Additionally, RAID management functions are said to enable expansion of storage capacity or migration to higher redundancy levels without turning off the system.

What's under the hood?

The TS-409 is based on a Marvell 5281 system-on-chip (SoC) clocked to 500MHz. It has 256MB of DDR2 RAM, and 8MB of flash. Supporting up to 4TB of internal storage, the NAS is equipped with a Gigabit Ethernet port and three USB 2.0 ports.

The TS-409 offers a secure browser interface, and also provides ssh shell access. The system offers extensive logging, backup, and monitoring options, including email alerts, the company said. Supported NAS protocols include secure FTP and HTTPS, among others.
