Metro Link announced that it demonstrated an extensive set of integrated software components and technologies for Linux-based set-top box (STB) and digital TV (DTV) applications in ATI's booth at the Mediacast 2003 conference in London, UK this week. Metro Link said the demonstration, which was based on a combination of software components from Metro Link and several partner companies, demonstrated the following capabilities: streaming video, high definition PVR, multi-TV PVR, MP3, EPG, DVB-T, TV-centric browsers, Macromedia Flash, Java virtual machines, telephony, and embedded UPnP.

According to Metro Link, its Metro MediaWorks software system -- installed on an ATI Xilleon-based HT-5060 digital set-top box (made by Proton Communications of Taiwan) -- received live DVB-T programs while simultaneously writing to disk (for PVR), streaming to another Proton HT-5060 (to demonstrate Multi-TV PVR over IP), and displaying stored videos and live broadcasts. Another key technology demonstrated was a Macromedia Flash GUI (developed by OnNet) viewed via ANT's Fresco browser, the company said.

Additionally, Skelmir's CEE-J Virtual Machine for hosting Java, MHP, OCAP, and OSGi applications (available for release in 3rd qtr 2003) was shown functioning as an integrated component of Metro MediaWorks. When released, the Skelmir CEE-J VM will be supplied with several Java applications including PVR, browser, gaming, chat and email, Metro Link said.

Also demonstrated, were applications and middleware solutions from Oregan Networks that provide HTML and Macromedia Flash user interfaces for Metro Link's DVB-T tuner control, DVB-SI data parsing, and Personal Video Recorder applications.
