Hypervisor vendor adds "embedded" version

XenSource has started shipping an "embedded" version of its hypervisor for AMD and Intel processors. XenExpress OEM Edition targets server vendors and other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) interested in delivering systems pre-installed with multiple BIOS partitions, and thus ready for the installation of multiple virtual machines.

XenExpress OEM is claimed to offer close-to-native performance, while providing robust security and OS isolation. It can be installed in flash or on hard drives, and is said to support the latest virtualization features in AMD and Intel processors. It supports VMware and Microsoft virtual machine formats, with a migration path promised to the virtualization features in Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

XenSource says OEM customers can use the OEM version to add value, such as serviceability, manageability, and security enhancements. Additionally, OEMs can "up-sell" end users to the "full XenEnterprise v4 feature set," the company suggests. The Enterprise version adds features that include:

Live migration of running virtual machines
Virtual infrastructure management supporting both 32- and 64-bit workloads
An API for add-on solutions

Frank Artale, VP of business development, stated, "XenSource was founded on the belief that our products should be simple and powerful enough to be embedded in every server as an extension of the hardware platform."

Availability

XenExpress OEM Edition is available today to OEMs, at undisclosed pricing. XenEnterprise v4 is also available, priced at $1,600 per dual socket server per year, or $2,500 for a perpetual license.
