MontaVista announces support for new IBM set-top box SOC

Amsterdam; International Broadcasting Convention -- (press release excerpt) -- MontaVista Software Inc. today announced that MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 2.1 will support IBM's new STBx25xx integrated set-top box system-on-chip (SOC) controller chip for next-generation digital set-top boxes.

The PowerPC 405 based STBx25xx controller provides a high performance, low cost solution for demanding digital set-top box applications, including multimedia home platforms (MHP), digital terrestrial services, interactive TV, Web browsing and data broadcasting.

The combination of the IBM STBx25xx and MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 2.1 supports new interactive applications that consumers can access through their television set-top boxes, such as online music and video on demand, Internet gaming, interactive TV, Web browsing, and secure online e-commerce transactions.

"Linux is increasingly a requirement for advanced applications and new generations of set-top boxes," said John Sixsmith, program manager, Pervasive Computing, IBM Microelectronics. "Customers are requesting support for the Linux platform."
