Linux box serves up embedded Java
Jun. 24, 2005

Sun Microsystems, Via Technologies, and iGoLogic Inc. will debut an x86-based development kit for embedded applications based on Sun's Java 2, Standard Edition (J2SE), next week at Java One. The compact, fully packaged system is supplied with a choice of Linux or Sun's Solaris operating system.

"We are very excited about the launch of this compact and versatile Java development tool, as it will enable us to better engage with the embedded community and provide a compelling reason to make J2SE the first choice for embedded applications," said Laurie Tolson, VP of Sun's Java Platform Group.

The JBox is based on Via's EPIA M10000 mini-ITX motherboard, which features a 1GHz VIA C3 processor, a Via CLE266 chipset with embedded MPEG-2 decoder and integrated UniChrome graphics core, and a rich set of peripheral interfaces. It comes with Sun's Java2 SE 5.0 Embedded, running on top of a choice of three OSes, two of which are Linux.
