| Vendors team up on ATCA/Linux platform |

 Carrier grade Linux (CGL) provider Wind River has partnered with network equipment provider (NEP) Radisys and high-availability middleware vendor Clovis on a "pre-integrated" ATCA/Linux platform. The platform has already been adopted by Airvana, a telecommunications equipment manufacturer (TEM) serving mobile broadband markets, the companies say.
Airvana is described as "a leader in IP-based mobile broadband network infrastructure." The "pre-integrated" hardware, software, and middleware platform adopted by Airvana comprises a Radisys Promentum Sys-6010 pre-integrated with Clovis's Application Service Platform (ASP), running on top of Wind River's Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (PNE-LE), according to the three partnering vendors.
Wind River announced in May of 2005 that it had been selected by number-two NEP Radisys to be its preferred CGL provider. Radisys and Clovis, in turn, announced their partnership in October of last year.
The companies say their pre-integrated solution enables Airvana and other TEM and NEP customers to "focus resources immediately on value-add application development," such as "system-wide management and operational features that appeal to and satisfy network operators' needs for greater interoperability and affordability."
Frank Chen, VP of engineering at Airvana, stated, "These COTS products underscore the industry's drive towards hardware and software standardization."
According to VDC embedded software analyst Stephen Ballacco, "One of the significant trends [VDC is] seeing from network infrastructure providers is a widespread move to define equipment requirements that mandate industry standards, manageability, and interoperability."
"The jointly developed ATCA-based solution from Wind River, RadiSys, and OpenClovis is an excellent example of the integration and interoperability benefits that can be achieved by a well-supported industry standard," adds Ballacco.
