Red Hat GCJ: GNU compiler for the Java programming language

Red Hat GCJ allows for the creation of high performance Java applications by taking advantage of the back-end code generation of the GNU GCC compiler to produce native code executables, thus eliminating the need for a JVM interpreter. A completely Open Source solution, GCJ was developed in a clean-room environment and was designed specifically to meet the needs of embedded devices.

GCJ provides an innovative approach to Java that lets developers harness the power, flexibility and safety the Java language provides while getting the benefits of native code execution.

Through it's Compiled Native Interface (CNI) for seamless Java/C++ integration, GCJ provides the best of both worlds: Java's safety and programmer support, along with the control and power C++ provides. Without the additional overhead and complexity of JNI, CNI allows for the natural use of Java objects from C++ code.

From use in cell phone networks and cars, to Lego Mindstorms and automated mining truck systems, uses for GCJ in embedded enviroments have proliferated and proven the broad ability of Java to excel as a development enviroment for embedded devices.

GCJ feature summary

GCJ is a portable, optimizing, ahead-of-time compiler for the Java Programming Language. It can compile . . .
  • Java source code to native machine code;
  • Java source code to Java bytecode (class files);
  • Java bytecode to native machine code.
Before executing your compiled application, you must link it with the GCJ runtime, libgcj, which consists of . . .
  • the core class libraries;
  • a garbage collector library;
  • an abstraction over the system threads;
  • optionally, a bytecode interpreter.
The addition of the bytecode interpreter means that GCJ compiled applications can dynamically load and interpret class files, resulting in mixed compiled/interpreted systems.

Compiled Java applications are debugged using recent versions of the GNU debugger, GDB. A short tutorial on using GDB to debug GCJ-compiled applications is available.

In addition to regular native programming, GCJ can be configured as a cross-compiler, suitable for embedded systems programming.
