VR4181A 64-bit MIPS system-on-chip processor
[Vendor: NEC Electronics, Inc.]

The 64-bit VR4181A (µPD30181A) processor is a true, ultra-power-efficient system-on-chip (SOC) that offers a new level of low-priced integration in an amazingly small package. Designed around the popular MIPS RISC architecture, the processor combines many peripherals and features that allow designers to build systems with fewer parts, extremely low power consumption, and excellent performance.

The very high level of integration, small size, low power consumption, and wide operating temperature range make this device ideal for use in mobile and automotive multimedia applications, and also in automotive and industrial controller applications where challenging physical and electrical conditions exist. The processor also excels in many battery-driven or portable handheld applications, even if not all of its multi-media features are used. The VR4120A CPU core, fabricated with 0.25µm process technology and featuring an optimized five-stage pipeline, 16 KB direct-mapped cache, multiply-and-accumulate (MAC) unit and memory management unit (MMU), executes 157 MIPS at 131 MHz. Compliant with the MIPS I, II, III, and MIPS16 instruction set architectures, this processor, like other VR Series microprocessors, maintains upward software compatibility. A useful power-saving feature turns off power to unused peripherals and also can be used to control access to the processor via the peripheral interfaces.

Support is available for operation of the device under Linux, as well as several other popular embedded operating systems.
