OnCore's Linux for Real-Time solutions enable embedded system designers who use Linux to pick the best memory footprint and performance model to meet their specific needs. All OnCore Linux for Real-Time solutions also provide microsecond-level interrupt response to real-time events.
Use Standard Linux
With the OnCore OS Microkernel as a foundation, standard Linux application binaries, from Red Hat or other compatible sources, immediately run on top of OnCore's standard Linux model. The Linux OS and Linux applications run in their own MMU-protected memory partition and can run in concert with real-time applications in other partitions. This feature allows designers to run Linux applications in an embedded environment and still have their real-time applications run reliably in higher priority contexts on the same silicon.
With OnCore's unique approach, designers can build their applications on a generic Linux desktop, and then take that binary immediately to an embedded platform. Linux OnCall
OnCore's Linux OnCall is a Linux API that makes direct OnCore microkernel calls, eliminating the Linux scheduler and process overhead. By stripping superfluous process and scheduler code from Linux and making direct microkernel calls, the memory footprint is reduced by approximately 90%, while real-time response characteristics are improved. Processor usage is reduced dramatically as well. Designers can now have direct access to TCP, UDP, IPV4, IPV6, 802.3, token ring, ax25, AppleTalk, decnet, ipx and Netlink services with Linux reliability from native real-time programs.
Linux OnCall is an ideal solution for designers who need to use the latest Linux network stacks, but need high performance and a smaller footprint than a full embedded Linux solution. Linux OnDemand
With OnCore's Linux OnDemand, embedded engineers can design systems that will facilitate the loading of a standard version of Linux into embedded systems on a temporary or as-needed basis. Linux OnDemand allows for an embedded environment with no Linux overhead to execute in production environments, and permits, when needed, bringing in a full Linux solution, using an NFS-mounted external disk. Any Linux application can run in this environment.
Linux OnDemand is ideal for the reconfiguration of an embedded application written in C. On command, an OnCore embedded device can enable NFS, mount a remote disk, create a root partition, load up an entire Linux system using the embedded processor and the remote disk, and then execute any Linux application. To reconfigure an existing application, the system would run a C compiler and linker, store the embedded executable on the NFS-mounted disk, read the executable in OnCore's virtual memory environment, begin execution of the new module, and then, on command, safely unload all of the Linux OnDemand modules to free up memory for normal production tasks. All this occurs while the production system is still online executing its normal applications.
