MZ104 -- an x86 PC/104 single board Linux computer
[Vendor: Tri-M Systems]

The MZ104 x86 single board computer will be of interest to anyone looking to embedded X86 technology into hostile, mobile, industrial, military, medical, and telecom environments -- or where a desktop systems is just not suitable.

PC/104 has become the de-facto standard for embedding X86 hardware. OEMs and other solution builders look for high reliability, cost effectiveness, reduced development time and easy of deployment and service support. Tri-M's MZ104 board (see photo) meets all these and more as a fully compliant PC/104 CPU engine featuring the standard I/O most often needed for the typical black box solution.

At the centre of the MZ104 is a 133Mhz 586 processor buried within the MACHZ silicon, together with both the ISA and PCI bus derived from the North and South Bridge core logic and a plethora of other I/O support. Coming bundled with a Phoenix BIOS, the MZ104 can be thought of as a very small motherboard compared to that found in a desktop PC. Yet providing all the functionality we have come to expect from our standard PCs.

Thus the MZ104 provides the users with a very comfortable environment for the software developer to test and port Linux kernel together application software. Providing you can successfully run Linux and your application software on your PC, it is only marginally more effort getting an embedded Linux together with your application and copying it to the storage device hock-up to the MZ104, be that IDE, Floppy or flash storage and simply turning the power on. OK it is never that easy, but it is not rocket science either.

This PC/104 X86 hardware platform is based around the revolutionary; single device PC chip called the MACHZ, manufactured by ZF Linux Devices Inc. The MZ104 is built using a 6-layer circuit board, and is very unique in that all its components are mounted on the top side of the board. This make for less expensive production, much reduced component count, and a corresponding increase in reliability and MTBF numbers.

The MZ104 is a low cost, low power consumption board featuring the standard features below as well as advanced system resource management and advanced power management including 1.2 functions. The BIOS also allows simple resource allocation in addition to PnP functionality. Features include . . .
  • Adjustable CPU clock from 33 ~ 133Mhz,
  • Standard Phoenix BIOS with extensions for additional embedded features,
  • 1, 2, or 4MB of onboard Flash memory, of which the 1st 256K is used for Phoenix BIOS with the remainder available for O/S and application software,
  • 2-64MB of SDRAM memory using SODIMM modules,
  • 8-288MB Flash disk support using M-Systems' DiskOnChip 2000,
  • Two standard IDE drives, floppy drives,
  • Two RS232 serial ports supporting data rates to 1.5Mbps,
  • One parallel port, EPP, ECC and IEEE 1248 support,
  • One USB port,
  • One I2C bus,
  • 16-bit PC/104 self-stacking expansion bus
