REDSonic's REDICE-Linux is a real-time Linux kernel, designed to support mission and time critical applications and provide quality of service to your system.

REDICE-Linux includes a high precision microsecond timer, a short preemption time kernel, powerful and predictable system schedulers, and mechanisms to provide task performance guarantees. REDICE-Linux provides the power and reliability of open source Linux and has a unique real-time system capability to guarantee application performance and task execution latency in the microsecond range.

REDICE-Linux Software Development Kit

The SDK provides an easy-to-use POSIX-like API that helps system developers write real-time applications on top of the REDICE-Linux kernel. The REDICE-Linux SDK includes a rate-monotonic scheduler with budget control, which guarantees both real-time performance and isolation among real-time applications.

Different from other real-time Linux implementations currently on the market, REDICE-Linux allows RTAI and REDICE-Linux to run concurrently. This enables real-time jobs requiring an extremely low latency (less than 50 microseconds) and hard real-time user applications (with complete Linux kernel support) the ability to run side by side, all under the same job priority structure.

The REDICE-Linux approach is to add new real-time capabilities to the standard Linux kernel, while preserving all existing Linux functionality. This is accomplished by the insertion of preemption points into the kernel and by including a high-resolution microsecond timer.

In addition to the preemptable kernel, REDICE-Linux includes a highly flexible two-component scheduler, the dispatcher and the allocator. By separating these two modules, it is easy to modify and integrate different scheduling paradigms all within the same general framework.

  • Responsiveness: Tasks will not be blocked by other less critical jobs for an indefinite length of time. Tasks are also more responsible due to a shortened kernel blocking delay.
