Intent Java Technology Edition (JTE) was created to make Java run-time environments suitable for embedded deployment, overcoming the limitations of footprint, performance and portability. Tao, a licensee of Sun's for Java technology, created its own Sun Authorised solution, a Virtual Machine (VM) and a comprehensive suite of class libraries including, for example, the full set required to meet the PersonalJava specification.

Java language implementations are often criticised for being slow and bulky. Certain Java engines have tended to achieve platform independence at the cost of performance; for example VM's using run-time interpretation are extremely slow. The slowness inherent in this procedure has traditionally been overcome by the use of a JIT (Just In Time) Compiler. But JIT's are notorious for creating a high bloat factor converting from Java Byte Code (JBC) to the target platform native, thereby exacerbating the footprint problem which limits the practical use of the Java language.

intent JTE gives its customers the most powerful engine for running Java applications, combining compliancy and dramatically superior speed with far smaller footprint than those offered by its competitors. However intent JTE is a unique environment in which to run Java, differing substantially from those previously implemented by using traditional JIT compilers. The intent JTE platform does not need a JIT as such, as the patented intent translation mechanism provide this functionality. Because of this, bloat factors of less than 2 are typical when the intent engine is used to convert Java Byte Code to native. Also intent JTE does not use an interpreter, as its translation mechanism ensures that all translated code is executed at native speeds.

Whereas the portability of the Java platform is restricted to the applications and some libraries, intent JTE offers completely portable systems. intent is unique in offering total portability in combination with exceptional performance and compactness. All of the Java-compliant libraries have been re-written in the Java language or Tao's acclaimed portable assembler code. This means that the same code set is utilised on intent, irrespective of whether it is running on another operating system or on a variety of different processor architectures. Consequently, it is much easier to support and develop into a robust piece of software, appropriate for consumer devices like phones or set-top boxes. But, most important, it means that applications display the same behavioural characteristics across all intent platforms. intent (JTE) enables portable systems consistent behaviour, fast performance, small footprint, easy maintenance and high levels of robustness.

The intent JTE is object based, thereby allowing fine grain sharing of small object based components in a truly dynamic environment. This system is the result of seven years of research and development, targeted at the consumer device market, assuming distributed multimedia applications. Multimedia content delivery and networked multi-platform applications have driven the development of intent. intent is composed of a set of tools that can be dynamically or statically loaded, by name, into the run time environment. The footprint in terms of both static memory (ROM, flash etc.) and dynamic memory (RAM), is extremely small, enabled by both the very small footprint of each of the tools, and the fine grained dynamic sharing of these tools at run time. Tools are fully re-locatable and re-entrant which means that they can be shared across multiple processes, with contention being managed in the Tao kernel.

The intent JTE platform achieves a very high degree of portability by defining a virtual processor layer. The Virtual Processor describes both a language, VP, and a platform isolation interface that allows a minimal set of platform dependent features to be isolated from the core of the intent JTE kernel. This minimises the amount of changes necessary to transport intent JTE to new platforms, and makes both the kernel and support tools extremely stable source code assets.

intent JTE is supported on embedded Linux and several other embedded operating systems.
