Lineo Embedix Linux distribution
[Vendor: Lineo]

Lineo's system development solution is a carefully engineered integration of Operating System elements and signed to ease your complete product development and release cycle, giving you the ability to spend your time on your product, not worrying about the OS, where a cross-development environment is going to come from, how you're going to debug your applications, or even the legal implications of developing your product on an open source platform.

Lineo Embedix Linux is a "100% Pure Linux" and Royalty free solution. Embedix Linux provides everything that you have come to expect from Linux combined an infrastructure to support non-Linux services such as:
  • Very high performance hard real-time
  • Multi-processor (DSPs, 16 bit, 32 bit, and non-heterogeneous architectures) support
  • Native support for Legacy RTOS APIs
  • Smart Handheld Device solution stacks (available now)
  • Digital TV solution stacks (coming soon!)
  • Support of applications which also run (with a simple re-compile) on very small footprint 16 bit and 32 bit microcontrollers and DSPs
Lineo Embedix Linux provides a tested, validated, approved, configuration managed software installation developed specifically at the target hardware, including:
  • Linux kernel
  • Linux device drivers
  • Linux services and applications
  • System libraries
  • Real-Time services (available on select processors)
  • Support for heterogeneous multi-core architectures (available on select processors)
  • Hard real-time support for legacy RTOS APIs (available on select processors)
  • Gnu tool chain:
  • C Compiler
  • Linker
  • Assembler
  • Debugging agents: User space; Kernel space; Kernel module space
For most embedded relevant processors, these services and development tools are not commonly available. So, you can't download Embedix Linux, however if you work really hard (several man months), you can roll-your-own solution which will have many of the same capabilities. But do you really want to spend your engineering cycles there?

Embedix Linux BSPs

Lineo Embedix Linux, as instantiated within each of Lineo's Board Support Packages is the base operating system and associated tools (compilers, linkers, etc.) on which Lineo's SDK operates for each target device.

All "Board Support Packages" for Linux are not created equal. Some of our competitors will quickly point out that they lead the BSP race in sheer numbers of supported boards. However, what they neglect to mention is that their BSPs are tightly coupled to each specific development board and that they are, effectively, pre-compiled binary distributions with little flexibility and few configuration options. This yields a software system which can be difficult to port from the development board to your custom hardware.

On the other hand, Lineo's BSPs are completely configurable, buildable, and fully integrated with the tool chain. These BSPs are designed to be flexible, allowing the developer to move from the standardized development board to their custom hardware without requiring the assistance of Lineo's support staff, and without resorting to all sorts or manual effort. For example, Lineo's BSPs provide capability to debug all address spaces, our deployment wizard simplifies the chore of moving the software from the development station to the target, and our sand-boxed development environment ensures that all of the software produced by your individual developers will be interoperable.
