Wonka is ACUNIA's Virtual Machine and class library for Java. It is available under the GPL-compatible Wonka Public Licence, based on the license used by BSD.

Wonka is extremely portable and self-contained, and can optionally be used with its own real-time operating system (RTOS) to provide a complete solution for embedded devices. All Java2 language features are supported, and the class libraries meet all the requirements for a platform to support the Open Service Gateway Initiative (OSGi) framework and the ACUNIA Open Telematics Framework (OTF).

Wonka was designed from the start as an embedded VM. We found that the telematics market lacked a Java platform that both provided the functionality we needed and was able to operate in an environment where system resources are limited and rebooting is not an option. So we made one.

Key features . . .

Garbage collection (GC) that works in parallel with application threads, guarantees that all the unused memory will be reclaimed and adapts its consumption of CPU time to the needs of the moment
A high-performance lightweight AWT which runs directly on any memory-mapped or framebuffer device. Or if you prefer you can run with no AWT, or even have the AWT loaded dynamically at run-time.
A Persistent Object Store (POS) feature which allows objects to retain their state while the system is shut down, without the need for explicit serialization / deserialization. Persistent objects need not extend or implement a special class or interface, so persistency requires no changes to existing code. The POS can be configured to use a "raw" storage device, removing the need for a conventional filing system in many cases.
Minimal dependence on outside libraries, written in highly portable ANSI C. Wonka's own RTOS layer "OSwald" further reduces porting effort by presenting a uniform interface between the VM and its environment. OSwald can be used as an RTOS in its own right, or can run as a "guest" of another operating system. Or the OSwald API can be simulated by means of calls to the "host" OS, so that Wonka behaves as a normal multithreaded application.
All internal data structures and algorithms have been designed to deliver constant high performance over time -- no need to reboot or "de-frag". Designed to perform predictably, to the maximum extent possible in a system which supports such essential Java features as dynamic class loading and late binding.
